Senior Traffic & Detour Engineer - Bridges

Overview

The Senior Traffic & Detour Engineer will be responsible for planning, developing, implementing, and monitoring traffic management and detour strategies for the Projects. The role focuses on ensuring the safe and efficient movement of vehicles, pedestrians, emergency services, and public transport throughout all phases of bridge and infrastructure construction.

Your role

Traffic Management Planning

  • Develop and implement Temporary Traffic Management Plans (TTMPs) for bridge and infrastructure construction activities.
  • Prepare traffic diversion and detour schemes to support phased construction works.
  • Review construction staging and identify traffic impacts associated with bridge erection, road closures, utility relocations, and infrastructure works.
  • Ensure traffic management plans comply with clients, MOT, and applicable Saudi standards and guidelines.
  • Coordinate traffic management requirements during project planning and construction phases.
  • Bridge & Infrastructure Traffic Coordination
  • Develop traffic phasing plans that maintain network functionality during bridge construction activities.
  • Coordinate lane closures, temporary alignments, and traffic diversions required for construction operations.
  • Review traffic impacts associated with bridge launching, girder erection, heavy lifting activities, and major structural works.

Traffic Studies & Analysis

  • Conduct traffic assessments and analyze construction-related impacts on road users.
  • Review traffic volumes, intersection performance, queue lengths, and operational constraints.
  • Evaluate alternative traffic diversion routes and recommend optimal solutions.
  • Assess pedestrian and cyclist movement requirements within construction zones.
  • Support traffic simulation and modelling exercises where required.

Traffic Safety & Road User Protection

  • Ensure all traffic management measures are designed and implemented with safety as the primary objective.
  • Monitor compliance with approved traffic control layouts and road safety requirements.
  • Inspect temporary signage, barricades, road markings, lighting systems, and directional guidance measures.
  • Support Road Safety Audits (RSA) and traffic safety inspections.

Construction Interface Management

  • Coordinate with construction and engineering teams to align traffic diversion plans with project schedules.
  • Review contractor traffic management proposals and provide technical recommendations.
  • Ensure traffic requirements are incorporated into construction methodologies and work packages.
  • Support planning and sequencing of road closures and restricted access activities.
  • Minimize traffic disruption while maintaining project productivity.

Stakeholder & Authority Coordination

  • Facilitate approvals for traffic diversions, detours, and road closure requests.
  • Participate in stakeholder meetings and traffic coordination workshops.
  • Ensure all authority requirements are incorporated into project traffic plans.

Monitoring & Reporting

  • Conduct regular inspections of temporary traffic management installations.
  • Monitor traffic performance and public feedback during implementation of diversion plans.
  • Maintain traffic management records, approvals, inspection reports, and compliance documentation.

Health, Safety & Environmental Compliance

  • Ensure traffic management activities comply with project HSE requirements.
  • Promote a culture of road safety within construction zones.
  • Support emergency response and incident management planning.
  • Ensure environmental impacts associated with traffic diversions are properly managed.

About you

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering, Transportation Engineering, Highway Engineering, or a related discipline.
  • Master's Degree in Transportation Engineering is desirable.
  • Professional Engineering registration or membership of a recognized engineering institution is preferred.

Experience Requirements

  • Minimum 12-15 years of experience in traffic engineering and transportation infrastructure projects.
  • Minimum 8 years of experience supporting major bridge, highway, or urban infrastructure projects.
  • Previous Saudi Arabia or GCC experience is highly desirable.
  • Experience working on large-scale government infrastructure and transportation projects is preferred.
