Your role

  • Ensure compliance with provincial, federal, and project-specific safety regulations (e.g., WorkSafe BC, Transport Canada).
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of applicable codes, standards, and environmental guidelines.
  • Assist the Safety Manager in implementing the Project Safety Plan and Construction Safety Management System.
  • Prepare and assist in Job Hazard Analyses (JHA) and Safe Work Procedures for specialized tasks.
  • Maintain accurate records of inspections, audits, and incident reports.
  • Conduct risk assessments for activities involving heavy equipment, confined spaces, and electrical systems.
  • Implement hazard control measures and monitor compliance with lockout/tagout procedures.
  • Perform daily site inspections to ensure adherence to safety protocols.
  • Audit subcontractors and suppliers for HSE compliance and track corrective actions.
  • Lead investigations of incidents and near misses, prepare reports, and recommend preventive measures.
  • Coordinate emergency response drills specific to rail and system hazards.
  • Deliver HSE inductions and toolbox talks focused on rail safety and electrical hazards.
  • Ensure workers are trained in fall protection, confined space entry, and working near energized equipment.
  • Collaborate with project managers, engineers, and subcontractors to integrate HSE requirements into work planning.
  • Communicate safety updates and participate in progress meetings to address HSE concerns.
  • Monitor environmental compliance during track construction (noise, vibration, dust control).
  • Ensure proper disposal of materials and manage spill prevention for lubricants and fuels.
  • Oversee safety during installation and testing of signalling, communication, and power systems.
  • Verify compliance with electrical safety standards during commissioning activities.
  • Support project management in directing contractors, visitors, and employees on project safety standards.
  • Participate in injury management processes, including OFA assessments, treatment, and return-to-work plans.
  • Guide Joint Occupational Safety and Health Committees on safety-related matters.
  • Conduct project-level inspections and audits as required by the safety program.
  • Provide training support for assigned program areas, including orientations and hazard assessment training.
  • Assist with claims management, including investigations, communications, and claim closures.
  • Develop and revise safe work practices and procedures as needed.
  • Work with production teams to resolve safety issues identified by WorkSafeBC representatives.
  • Participate in and/or provide directions during incident investigations and ensure corrective actions are implemented.

About you

  • High School Diploma: Mandatory.
  • 5–7 years of relevant experience in a safety role.
  • Construction Safety Officer Certification.
  • Valid Class 5 driver's license. (Mandatory).
  • Current First Aid/CPR certifications (preferred).
  • Strong knowledge of BC Occupational Health and Safety Regulations.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office software.
  • Working knowledge of heavy equipment and construction processes.
  • CRSP designation is an asset.

Skills & Competencies:

  • Rail safety standards, electrical systems, and signalling protocols.
  • WorkSafeBC, Transport Canada and environmental compliance requirements.
  • Ability to identify hazards and implement effective control measures.
  • Clear and professional communication with multidisciplinary teams.
  • Ability to influence safety culture and lead investigations.
  • Analytical skills to resolve safety issues and recommend preventive actions.
  • Skilled in conducting inductions, toolbox talks, and specialized training sessions.
  • Strong documentation and reporting capabilities for audits and inspections.

Expected compensation for this role is (between Pay Range $75,700 - $126,100 annually) (Only Applicable to British Columbia). Base salaries are determined according to several parameters like skills, experience, and potential impact on the role. Internal and external competitiveness are also taken into account in our offers.
