Candu Energy Inc. is looking to hire a Senior Mechanical PLiM/PLEX Engineer. This position requires experienced individuals who are self-starter capable of working independently. The individuals will work in a fast-paced team environment performing and leading engineering services for Nuclear Power Plants within a matrix organization.
Your role
- Lead a team of junior and intermediate engineers, provide mentoring and coaching and impart training and plant life management and extension PLiM/PLEX knowledge transfer to develop human resources into long term corporate assets.
- Work closely with and monitor and supervise the work of PLiM/PLEX consultants, contractors and vendor service teams for specific tasks and assignments during the normal plant operation and during the outage cycles.
- Use working knowledge of PLiM/PLEX, Age Related Degradation Mechanism, Systematic Assessment of Maintenance, and FMEA procedures and techniques, work out and implement plant specific methodologies to proactively assess potential damages and put in place sound workable plans and strategies to mitigate the long and short term risks to enhance the plant life, maintain plant operational performance, reliability and safety of the systems, structures, equipment and components in the Nuclear Steam Plant and the Balance of Plant.
- Provide support to the technical lead to perform conceptual and detail plant life management and life extension activities including systems decomposition, system analysis, criticality analysis, task selection and single point vulnerability assessments.
- With a strong focus on PLiM/PLEX needs and requirements, interact with other related disciplines and provide mechanical and equipment engineering input for the preparation of technical deliverables including specifications, plant layout, inspection and test procedures, commissioning plans and registration design submissions for nuclear power plant (NPP) components and mechanical systems.
- Coordinate with large scale new and existing nuclear power plants of considerable technical and commercial complexity and provide technical advice and guidance for the overall plant life management including critical systems and critical equipment covering: pumps, fans, motors, valves, heat exchanges, steam generators, pressure vessels, tanks, piping, HVAC systems, steam turbines, condensers, generators and associated mechanical components, as applicable to nuclear plants.
- Define project work scope, monitoring and reporting project progress and communicating with clients.

- Conduct site visits at nuclear generating stations for plant and equipment inspection and testing, condition monitoring and recommend plans for preventive maintenance and long and short-term mitigation of degradation mechanism.

About you
- Engineering degree from an accredited University in Mechanical, Process or Nuclear Engineering.
- Registered Professional Engineer in the Province of Ontario, qualified to seal engineering documents.
- Proven and industry recognized plant life management and extension experience, preferably in the Candu nuclear power plants, fossil fuel power stations, petrochemical plants or oil refineries covering major system and critical equipment, mechanical design and operation and maintenance of industrial machines, automation equipment and automated-tooling design, and/or in equipment engineering with extensive knowledge in pumps, fans, motors, valves, heat exchanges, steam generators, pressure vessels, tanks, piping, HVAC systems, steam turbines, condensers, generators and associated mechanical components, as applicable to nuclear plants.
- A strong and well recognized team player with an understanding and proven experience of inter-discipline coordination and in developing maintenance-based design and working methodologies for risk assessment and management using mitigation methodologies for plant and equipment aging related degradation mechanisms.
- Solid understanding of process systems, mechanics and working principles of large sized and complex rotating machines and static equipment, operation and maintenance procedures, mechanics of materials, material selection and fundamentals of machine component design.
- Solid understanding and experience in equipment sizing, selection, and troubleshooting issues at plant sites.
- Must have experience to use and provide support for the software program used to perform SAM.
- Proven working knowledge of/ and establish experience using nuclear pressure boundary Codes and Standards, including CSA N285.0 and ASME Sections III and other applicable codes and standards.
- Knowledge of/ and proven experience in Plant Life Management (PLiM)/Plant Life Extension (PLEX) including maintenance and refurbishments of critical equipment and system aging process and degradation mechanism and the use of application of proven mitigation methodologies to enhance the equipment life, operational performance, and reliability with specific focus on plant, environment and personnel safety.
- Knowledge of/and experience in the philosophy and application of maintenance-based design strategies of CANDU nuclear power plants.
- Understands the significance of and must have a thorough knowledge and proven experience in Age-Related Degradation Mechanisms (ARDMs) on Systems, Structures and Components.
- Must have proven field experience in prevention and mitigation strategies that address systems and equipment issues related to the ARDMs.
- Must have proven knows-how and recognized industry experience to address ARDMs and perform:
- Condition assessments and life assessments of passive components and structures.
- Systematic Assessment of Maintenance (SAM) analyses active components.
- Must have an up-to-date knowledge of general maintenance theory (run to maintenance vs condition-based monitoring vs time-based maintenance.
- Must be familiar with failure modes, effects, and criticality analyses (FMECA).
- Must be conversant with the development and use of the equipment maintenance templates and its integration into the softwares.
- Understands the working principles and repair and replace (RR) strategies and the factors that influence them.
- Working knowledge and understanding of software.
- Strong written and oral communication and technical report writing skills.
- Willing to travel to and potentially work at Project sites to meet corporate needs (Note: the initial site location is at the Mississauga head office in Ontario).
Additional, preferred qualifications:
- Historical knowledge of CANDU plant relevant equipment and components.
- Hands-on knowledge of software.
- Working knowledge of/experience with the CSA B51 standard, ANSI B31.1 codes, ASME Section VIII and other nuclear-power-plant applicable standards or regulatory guides related to permanent plant components, pressure boundary equipment, and/or reactor systems is an asset.
