Powering major infrastructure: Paul on leading electrical engineering in British Columbia

I’m the Manager of Electrical Engineering for British Columbia at AtkinsRéalis, where I lead our Vancouver electrical team and support the delivery of complex infrastructure projects.

On paper, that means overseeing design, guiding multidisciplinary teams, and ensuring technical excellence. In reality, it’s about bringing people together to solve challenging problems and delivering projects that will serve communities for decades.

Building a career through complexity and opportunity

I started my career with AtkinsRéalis because of the opportunity to work on large scale projects, particularly in transit and defense. There’s something uniquely motivating about being part of work that quite literally shapes how cities move and function.

My role evolved, from Electrical Engineer to Project Manager, and eventually into leadership. With each step came more responsibility and experiences. I’ve had the chance to work across the full project lifecycle, seeing projects take shape from early planning through to construction and commissioning.

Leading projects that make a lasting impact

There’s something powerful about watching a project move from concept to completion and knowing that the systems you’ve worked on will be used by thousands of people every day.

Just as important to me is mentoring engineers along the way. Seeing someone build confidence, strengthen their technical skills, and take ownership of their work is one of the most rewarding parts of leadership.

Delivering innovation across complex infrastructure projects

My work spans a wide range of infrastructure sectors, including transit systems, power distribution, tunnel lighting and safety systems, marine and defense infrastructure, and electrification projects like EV charging systems.

I’ve had the opportunity to contribute as an Electrical Engineer of Record and Project Lead on large, complex programs such as the Pearl Harbor P209 SIOP Dry Dock project for the U.S. Navy. I’ve also worked on the Eisenhower Johnson Memorial Tunnel LED Lighting Upgrade. Closer to home, the BC Ferries Fleet Maintenance Upgrade stands out as a project that directly supports essential services in the region.

Shaping the future of electrical engineering

What excites me most about electrical engineering right now is the pace of change.

We’re seeing rapid growth in electrification, smart systems, and sustainable infrastructure, and electrical engineers are at the center of this shift. From modernizing aging assets to enabling low carbon solutions, the work we do today is directly shaping the future.

Staying abreast of current standards is essential through continuous learning and training. But honestly, it’s the variety of projects and challenges that keeps things interesting and keeps me learning.

How leadership became part of my career

My transition into leadership came from gradually taking on more responsibility, both technically and from a project perspective.

A strong technical foundation is critical, but leadership requires more than that. Communication and the ability to bring multidisciplinary teams together are just as important.

For engineers starting out in their career, my advice is simple: stay curious, seek out hands on experience early, and don’t hesitate to ask questions. The more you understand how things work in practice, the stronger your foundation will be.
