After completing a co‑op internship in rock mechanics at AtkinsRéalis in Canada, I gained much more than my first professional experience. I discovered a field I am passionate about and a team that genuinely supports the development of emerging talent.

From university to the professional world
I completed a bachelor's degree in Geological Engineering through a co‑op program that allowed me to undertake four internships. By the end of my studies, I wanted to explore the field of rock mechanics. My interest in numerical modelling and large‑scale projects led me to believe that this specialty had a great deal to offer.
During a university networking event, I spoke with an AtkinsRéalis representative about internship opportunities in this field. That conversation led to my fourth internship with the Rock Mechanics team in the summer of 2025.
A few months later, after confirming my interest in rock mechanics and building valuable relationships within the team, I was offered the opportunity to return to AtkinsRéalis full‑time after graduation. I officially joined the company as a permanent employee in March 2026.

Discovering the real‑world impact of rock mechanics
Rock mechanics involves studying the behaviour of rock masses to ensure they meet a project's requirements.
To understand how rock behaves, engineers use a variety of methods, including field testing, laboratory analysis, geological mapping, and numerical modelling. This process helps ensure the safe and sustainable design of many types of infrastructure.
What I enjoy most about my profession is the diversity of projects. No two assignments are truly alike, which keeps the work engaging and allows me to deepen my knowledge quickly.
Why did I choose rock mechanics?
My interest in numerical modelling and infrastructure projects motivated me to explore this specialty during my studies, and my internship confirmed that I had made the right choice.
A memorable field experience
One of the most memorable experiences since joining the AtkinsRéalis team was overseeing a construction site for which I had helped prepare the technical documentation.
Seeing firsthand the impact of decisions made during the design phase gave me a deeper appreciation of the engineer's role. I also learned on site just how essential communication among stakeholders is to a project's success.
This field experience enhanced my understanding of engineering as a profession that extends far beyond calculations and analysis.
A profession built on collaboration
Before entering the workforce, I expected rock mechanics to be primarily focused on technical aspects. I quickly discovered that collaboration is just as important.
At AtkinsRéalis, I work with specialists from a wide range of disciplines. This multidisciplinary approach allows me to continuously learn and gain a broader understanding of the many factors that contribute to a project's success.

My advice to future engineers
If I could offer one piece of advice to students and recent graduates, it would be to stay curious and never hesitate to ask questions.
Technical skills are important, but so are open‑mindedness, teamwork, and the willingness to learn from experienced colleagues. Surrounding yourself with the right people can make all the difference in your professional growth.
Is rock mechanics a good field for starting a career?
Absolutely. The diversity of projects and the opportunity to collaborate with experts enable young professionals to learn quickly and build strong technical expertise. The most rewarding experiences are often those that challenge us to grow.
