Alexandre, mechanical engineer at AtkinsRéalis: leading industrial lifting projects in Saguenay

When I chose to join AtkinsRéalis in Canada, I wanted to explore a new side of engineering. After working for contractors and equipment manufacturers as an estimator, project manager, and design engineer, this was my first experience with an engineering consulting firm. Today, I can confidently say that this decision has allowed me to broaden my skills while contributing to major industrial projects across the Saguenay‑Lac‑Saint‑Jean region of Quebec.

A career built on diverse experiences

My professional journey has led me to take on a variety of roles within the industry. Each experience helped me develop a practical understanding of every stage of a project, from estimating and design through to execution and delivery.

By joining AtkinsRéalis, I discovered an environment where projects are diverse, challenges are plentiful, and learning opportunities are constant. Working alongside specialists from multiple disciplines has enabled me to expand my expertise while delivering meaningful value to the clients we support.

Leading major industrial projects in Saguenay

As a mechanical engineer and project manager, I specialize in industrial lifting equipment, including overhead cranes, jib cranes, and lifting beams.

I work primarily on heavy industrial projects in aluminum smelters throughout the Saguenay‑Lac‑Saint‑Jean region. These assignments range from new installations and equipment refurbishments to improvement projects designed to enhance operational performance and safety.

One of the projects that left the greatest impression on me was the installation of overhead cranes for anode furnaces at a regional production facility. These cranes play a critical role in the plant’s day‑to‑day operations, requiring meticulous planning, close coordination among stakeholders, and a high level of reliability.

What does a typical week on site look like?

A large part of my week is spent at industrial facilities. I work directly with subcontractors, manufacturers, and client representatives to ensure projects progress smoothly and successfully.

My day‑to‑day responsibilities include:

  • Monitoring project progress;
  • Coordinating activities among stakeholders;
  • Reviewing and approving lifting plans;
  • Resolving technical challenges;
  • Managing logistics‑related issues;
  • Communicating project updates to clients.

This close connection to field operations is what makes my work especially rewarding. Every project presents its own realities, constraints, and opportunities for innovation.

Overcoming challenges through collaboration

One of the main challenges of my role is coordinating the many stakeholders involved in large‑scale projects. Each organization brings its own priorities, constraints, and objectives.

Success depends on our ability to bring different perspectives together, encourage collaboration, and keep projects aligned with client expectations. This is one of the aspects of my work that I enjoy most, as it calls for strong interpersonal abilities just as much as technical expertise.

How new technologies are transforming my work

The industry is evolving rapidly, and emerging technologies are playing an increasingly important role in the way we deliver projects.

I am particularly excited about the potential of tools such as:

  • 3D modelling;
  • Digital scanning of industrial facilities;
  • Augmented reality;
  • Laser measurement instruments;
  • Digital construction site integration technologies.

These solutions help improve accuracy, reduce risk, and optimize the execution of refurbishment and integration projects.

Growing through challenges

Since joining AtkinsRéalis, I have developed several skills that support me every day, including resourcefulness, independence, attention to detail, and a commitment to delivering high‑quality results.

What I appreciate most is the opportunity to continuously take on new challenges while working alongside experienced colleagues. Every project becomes an opportunity to learn, grow, and further develop my expertise.

My advice to future candidates is simple: keep an open mind. Take the time to learn from everyone around you. Some of the most valuable skills are gained through the experiences and knowledge shared by others.
