Your Career, Your Creation: Alexander Huynh's journey at AtkinsRéalis

Starting a career straight out of university can be daunting, but for Alexander, a Mechanical Engineering graduate who joined AtkinsRéalis in 2018, success came through curiosity, seizing opportunities, and creating inclusive solutions. Alexander's rise from a Melbourne graduate to Senior Consultant on Queensland's largest rail project highlights how supportive company culture, mentorship, and meaningful work can foster technical expertise and leadership growth.

Alexander Huynh

Early days in Melbourne

When Alexander joined AtkinsRéalis's Melbourne office in 2018, the Rollingstock team provided a smooth transition from university to professional practice. Early assignments, like working with Yarra Trams, offered immediate exposure to real-world engineering challenges, showcasing the tangible impact of technical decisions on thousands of daily commuters. These projects built a strong foundation in problem-solving, stakeholder collaboration, and teamwork, while emphasizing the importance of collective responsibility in delivering successful outcomes.

Seizing opportunities and excelling

In 2020, Alexander pursued a one-year secondment with the Queensland Train Manufacturing Program (QTMP), which proved transformative. Relocating to Brisbane in 2021 demonstrated adaptability, a key driver of professional growth. QTMP, one of Australia’s largest rail infrastructure projects, exposed Alexander to advanced technical challenges, regulatory compliance, and large-scale project management.

Alexander’s progression within QTMP—from writing technical specifications to evaluating tenders and leading technical assurance—showcased career advancement through growing expertise and influence. These roles honed precision, commercial awareness, and leadership skills, preparing Alexander for greater responsibilities and impactful decision-making.

Creating impact with inclusive design

A key part of Alexander’s work involves engaging with community stakeholders, particularly those with disabilities, to ensure train designs are inclusive. By incorporating lived experiences into final products, Alexander’s team goes beyond compliance, creating practical improvements that benefit all users.

This work transforms technical problem-solving into meaningful social impact, while building skills in stakeholder engagement, empathetic problem-solving, and user-centered thinking—valuable across all engineering disciplines.

Professional development and recognition

Earning chartership in 2024 marked a major milestone for Alexander, showcasing advanced technical skills, ethical practice, and dedication to growth. This credential unlocked greater responsibilities and career advancement. Alexander’s promotion to Senior Consultant the same year further demonstrated expanded leadership capabilities, blending technical expertise with business acumen to navigate complex challenges.

AtkinsRéalis’s investment in employees through conferences, courses, and learning opportunities fosters innovation, enhances project outcomes, and strengthens competitive advantage.

Leadership and team culture

Alexander’s participation in the Australasian Railway Association’s Future Leaders Program reflects a commitment to growth beyond job duties. The program fosters skill building, networking, and career reflection, helping participants refine decision-making and develop strategies for future leadership roles.

AtkinsRéalis’s collaborative culture also plays a key role in career satisfaction. A supportive team dynamic encourages innovation, open communication, and creative problem-solving. Flexibility and work-life balance further attract and retain top talent, offering early-career professionals a foundation for long-term success.

Practical advice for career success

Alexander’s advice—“Be open to opportunities”—emphasizes embracing challenges for growth. Saying yes to stretch assignments, relocations, and development programs builds skills and opens doors, even when the path isn’t immediately clear.

For new graduates, prioritizing roles with strong learning potential, even if they don’t align perfectly with initial goals, is key. Each experience contributes to long-term success, often in unexpected ways.

Building a meaningful career

Alexander’s journey demonstrates that career satisfaction stems from blending technical excellence, meaningful impact, supportive relationships, and continuous growth. Success in engineering requires collaboration, adaptability, and lifelong learning, as well as recognizing how individual contributions serve larger goals.

At AtkinsRéalis, Alexander’s story highlights how personal drive and organizational support create fulfilling, impactful careers. If you’re ready to shape your own career journey and grow with a team that values your potential, explore the exciting opportunities available at AtkinsRéalis today.
