In the world of process engineering, no two days are ever the same. Between project coordination, solving technical challenges, and collaborating with multidisciplinary teams, Félix has found an environment that fuels his curiosity and constant desire to learn. His journey proves that it is never too late to redirect your career and explore new opportunities.

A journey driven by curiosity
If you had asked me at the beginning of my studies where my career would lead, I probably would never have answered, “process engineer”.
I first earned a bachelor’s degree in Microbiology and Immunology before entering the workforce as a plant operator. Because I worked closely with engineers, I became increasingly interested in their profession.
I was struck by the diversity of their responsibilities and their ability to understand an entire process rather than just one stage of it.
Two years later, I decided to return to university and pursue a degree in Chemical Engineering.
Throughout my engineering studies, I took every opportunity to explore different industries. I completed internships in the mining, mechanical, and pharmaceutical sectors to gain exposure to the many facets of engineering.
It was ultimately during an internship at AtkinsRéalis that I found an environment that truly matched my aspirations.
Finding my place through project diversity
After my internship, I continued working part‑time during my final semester of engineering studies before officially joining AtkinsRéalis Canada at the beginning of 2025.
The variety of opportunities available was what initially attracted me to AtkinsRéalis.
“In my previous professional experiences, I often felt like I had reached a ceiling. At AtkinsRéalis, I was immediately offered different types of projects and responsibilities that went beyond what I was used to.”
The trust placed in me by my employer has had a significant impact on my professional growth.
I also quickly discovered a strong team‑oriented culture at AtkinsRéalis, where professional relationships often develop into genuine friendships.
For me, this combination of professional challenges and a strong sense of community is one of the greatest benefits of working at AtkinsRéalis.
Wearing many hats every day
The diversity of assignments is one of the things I enjoy most about consulting.
Today, I contribute to two major projects that allow me to explore different aspects of the engineering profession.
On a pharmaceutical plant expansion project, I serve as Co‑Lead for the Process discipline. My responsibilities include coordinating process modifications, reviewing technical drawings, updating process and instrumentation diagrams (P&IDs), and eventually participating in on‑site activities.
I am also part of an engineering management and planning team, where I help ensure project schedules are met, monitor deliverable progress, and coordinate activities among disciplines, other engineering firms, and the client.
Some days are filled with meetings and coordination activities, while others are focused primarily on technical work.
Seeing projects from a different perspective
The renovation of Montréal’s Olympic Stadium Tower holds a special place among the projects I have worked on early in my career.
Although my responsibilities were more closely related to mechanical engineering than process engineering, the Olympic Stadium experience allowed me to develop a deeper understanding of the realities and challenges faced by other disciplines.
However, the technical aspect was not the only thing that left an impression on me.
“Having the opportunity to explore every corner of the Olympic Stadium and see Montréal from the top of the tower is an experience I will always remember.”
The experience also reminded me that engineering can provide unique opportunities to discover iconic places and projects from a privileged perspective.
Growing through challenges
At AtkinsRéalis, I quickly learned that employees are often entrusted with significant responsibilities earlier than expected in their careers.
Regardless of experience level, we are encouraged to contribute fully to project execution and take ownership of important assignments.
The trust placed in us can sometimes be challenging.
“Some projects can change completely within a matter of hours. You need to be able to adapt immediately, take on new responsibilities, and find effective solutions quickly.”
Yet it is precisely these unexpected situations that foster growth and build confidence.
The future of process engineering
Digital tools play a major role in the innovations that excite me the most.
Today, 3D modeling and visualization environments make it possible to analyze projects in the finest detail even before construction begins.
These technologies enhance coordination across disciplines, improve safety, and help identify potential issues much earlier in the project lifecycle.
My advice to future candidates
If there is one lesson I have learned throughout my professional journey, it is that no career decision is ever truly final.
Choosing a field of study, an industry sector, or a first job does not mean you will be confined to that path for the rest of your career.
To me, AtkinsRéalis is above all a company of opportunities. It offers the chance to work on large‑scale projects, explore different industries, and continuously develop new skills throughout your career.
Shape your future with AtkinsRéalis
Whether you are just beginning your studies, preparing to graduate, or starting your career, AtkinsRéalis gives you the opportunity to contribute to a wide variety of projects while strengthening your technical expertise and developing your leadership skills.
