Director of Manufacturing and Materials Management

Overview

Candu Energy Inc., an AtkinsRéalis company, is the Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) for CANDU® reactor technology. As the OEM and long‑term steward of CANDU systems, Candu Energy is entrusted with maintaining the safety, reliability, and performance of the global CANDU fleet while preparing the supply base and manufacturing capability required to support new build programs, including the CANDU® MONARK™ reactor.

The SP3 facility at Sheridan Park is a cornerstone of this mandate. SP3 is a licensed, nuclear‑grade manufacturing and testing facility supporting the fabrication, assembly, inspection, and qualification of safety‑significant components and tooling. Its capabilities, including precision machining, assembly, metrology, materials testing, and radiation laboratories are central to Candu Energy's credibility as an OEM and to our ability to deliver against the expectations of nuclear utilities worldwide.

As global demand for reliable, low‑carbon nuclear energy accelerates, excellence in nuclear manufacturing and materials management is critical to sustaining customer confidence, enabling fleet life extension, and supporting future reactor deployments.

Your role

Strategic Manufacturing Leadership & OEM Accountability:

  • Provide overall leadership and strategic direction for the SP3 manufacturing facility in alignment with Candu Energy's'OEM objectives.
  • Establish SP3 as a best‑in‑class nuclear manufacturing operation, capable of supporting current fleet obligations and future reactor programs.
  • Translate OEM strategy into executable manufacturing, materials, and capacity plans.
  • Own accountability for operational performance, workforce capability, and facility readiness.

Manufacturing & Materials Management Operations:

  • Direct all manufacturing functions at SP3, including machine shop operations, fabrication, mechanical and I&C assembly, metrology, materials engineering, and radiation laboratories.
  • Ensure end‑to‑end execution from production planning through manufacturing, inspection, testing, and delivery.
  • Oversee materials management, inventory control, configuration management, and material traceability in accordance with nuclear quality requirements.
  • Ensure manufacturing readiness for complex, safety‑significant nuclear components and tooling.

Safety, Quality & Regulatory Compliance:

  • Accountable for nuclear safety, industrial safety, and environmental compliance across all SP3 operations.
  • Ensure adherence to nuclear quality assurance programs, regulatory requirements, and corporate governance standards.
  • Champion a strong nuclear safety culture, reinforcing procedural compliance, training, and continuous learning.
  • Lead corrective action, event investigation, and performance improvement initiatives.

Delivery Performance & Continuous Improvement:

  • Drive delivery to cost, schedule, and quality commitments through disciplined execution and performance management.
  • Establish and monitor key performance indicators (KPIs) for safety, quality, delivery, productivity, and workforce effectiveness.
  • Lead continuous improvement initiatives across manufacturing processes, facility layout, tooling, and workflow optimization.
  • Identify and mitigate operational risks related to capacity, skills, aging equipment, and obsolescence.

Workforce Leadership & Capability Development:

  • Lead, develop, and engage a multidisciplinary workforce of 70+ employees across skilled trades, technologists, engineers, and supervisors.
  • Build a strong leadership bench and succession plan for critical manufacturing and technical roles.
  • Foster a culture of accountability, collaboration, and pride in nuclear manufacturing excellence.
  • Ensure training, qualification, and authorization programs meet nuclear and regulatory expectations.

Stakeholder & Interface Management:

  • Act as the senior operational interface between SP3 and internal stakeholders across engineering, supply chain, project delivery, and OEM leadership.
  • Support customer interactions, audits, and facility tours, representing SP3 as a credible nuclear manufacturing organization.
  • Engage with suppliers, partners, and regulatory bodies as required to support SP3 operations.
  • Provide clear, data‑driven communication to senior leadership on facility performance, risks, and improvement plans.

Required interfaces:

  • Candu Energy OEM leadership and senior executives.
  • Engineering, supply chain, and project delivery organizations.
  • Skilled trades, supervisors, and technical staff at SP3.
  • Customers, auditors, and regulatory bodies as required.
  • Strategic suppliers and manufacturing partners.

About you

  • Education: Bachelor's degree in Engineering or equivalent technical discipline required.
  • Certifications: PMP is an asset.
  • Leadership Experience: 15+ years of experience leading manufacturing or operations in a regulated industrial environment; nuclear experience strongly preferred.
  • Nuclear Manufacturing: Strong understanding of nuclear‑grade manufacturing, quality assurance, and regulatory expectations.
  • Site Leadership: Proven experience leading complex manufacturing facilities with large, multidisciplinary workforces.
  • Operational Excellence: Demonstrated strength in cost, schedule, capacity, and performance management.
  • Safety & Quality: Deep appreciation for nuclear safety culture and quality programs.
  • People Leadership: Experience leading and developing teams of 70+ staff in technical and industrial settings.
  • Technical Acumen: Ability to understand and integrate machining, fabrication, materials engineering, testing, and inspection requirements.
  • Communication: Strong written and verbal communication skills, capable of engaging credibly with executives, regulators, and customers.
