Geotechnical Laboratory Professional

Overview

We are currently seeking an experienced and technically strong Geotechnical Laboratory Professional to join our Geotechnical Practice in Ontario. This role is based out of Vaughan, ON, supporting a diverse portfolio of infrastructure, transportation, energy, and urban development projects. The successful candidate will play a critical role in delivering high‑quality, defensible laboratory testing on complex soil and rock materials, supporting advanced geotechnical analyses and design.

This is an excellent opportunity for a seasoned laboratory professional who takes pride in technical rigor, understands the importance of sample quality and testing integrity, and is motivated to work on challenging projects within a collaborative, industry‑leading geotechnical team.

Your role

  • Perform, reduce the data and oversee advanced and high‑complexity geotechnical laboratory testing in accordance with applicable standards (e.g. ASTM, ISO, MTO-LS, and others) and MTO laboratory test classifications, covering soils and rock materials.
  • Execute and manage a wide range of advanced testing programs, including triaxial testing (CU, CD, UU), uniaxial compression, direct shear, consolidation, permeability (including rigid and flexible‑wall), and full rock mechanics testing suites including USC, Triaxial, Direct Shear, Point Load and others.
  • Lead project‑level planning and allocation management for laboratory work, including test sequencing, resource allocation, scheduling, and coordination with project managers and geotechnical engineers.
  • Operate automated laboratory equipment with a high level of proficiency; maintain familiarity with manual testing machines and procedures to support verification, troubleshooting, and non‑routine testing.
  • Apply and support calibration programs, quality control metrics, and QA/QC procedures, ensuring data integrity, repeatability, defensibility, and compliance with internal and external audit requirements.

About you

  • Diploma or advanced diploma from a recognized technical or engineering technology program (e.g., civil, geotechnical, or materials technology), or a bachelor's degree in science or engineering; a Civil or Geotechnical Engineering degree is considered a strong asset.
  • 5–10 years of progressive experience in a geotechnical engineering laboratory, with demonstrated responsibility for advanced and high‑complexity testing.
  • Extensive hands‑on experience with MTO‑classified low, medium and high‑complexity laboratory tests, including soil strength, deformation, permeability, and rock mechanics testing.
  • Strong proficiency with automated testing systems, with working knowledge of manual laboratory equipment, specimen preparation, and testing fundamentals.
  • Solid understanding of calibration principles, quality control metrics, and laboratory QA/QC systems, with attention to data quality, traceability, and technical defensibility.

Additional information

Expected compensation for this role is between $65,000 - 89,300 annually. Base salaries are determined according to several parameters like skills, experience, and potential impact on the role. Internal and external competitiveness are also taken into account in our offers.
