Overview

We are looking for a highly skilled Senior Electrical Engineer with strong experience in lighting design, electrical building services, and UK regulatory compliance. This role involves leading lighting and electrical design packages for commercial, residential, industrial, and public-sector projects across the UK. The ideal candidate brings a deep understanding of UK standards, low-carbon design principles, and modern lighting technologies.

Your role

Lighting Design & Engineering

  • Lead the design of internal and external lighting systems, including concept development, detailed layouts, photometric calculations, and controls integration.
  • Produce lighting calculations using industry tools such as Dialux, Relux, and AGi32.
  • Prepare electrical infrastructure designs including LV distribution, power layouts, containment, cable sizing, and circuit schedules.
  • Ensure all lighting designs meet UK-specific standards such as CIBSE lighting guides, BS 7671 (IET Wiring Regulations), BS EN 12464, and Building Regulations.

Technical Leadership & Coordination

  • Supervise and mentor junior engineers, reviewing drawings, specifications, and calculations.
  • Coordinate closely with architects, MEP consultants, contractors, and local authorities.
  • Contribute to design team meetings, planning submissions, and client presentations.
  • Ensure designs incorporate UK sustainability standards including BREEAM, Part L (energy efficiency), and low-carbon strategies.

Project Delivery & Site Support

  • Manage project stages from feasibility and concept design through detailed design, tendering, and construction.
  • Conduct site inspections, lighting level verification, snagging, and commissioning support.
  • Prepare technical specifications, tender documentation, reports, and cost estimates.
  • Resolve technical issues during construction and coordinate with contractors for smooth delivery.

Quality Assurance & Compliance

  • Ensure all electrical and lighting designs comply with UK regulations, including:
    • BS 7671:2018 (IET Wiring Regulations)
    • Building Regulations Part L'and Part B
    • CIBSE LG7, LG9, LG12, and other relevant guidance
    • CDM 2015 health and safety requirements
  • Implement robust quality checks and verify design accuracy before issue.

About you

  • Bachelor'S or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering or Building Services Engineering.
  • 7+ years of electrical engineering experience, with significant UK lighting design exposure.
  • Strong working knowledge of BS standards, IET Wiring Regulations, and UK building regulations.
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD, Revit (MEP), Dialux, Relux, and other design tools.
  • Experience delivering electrical and lighting packages for UK construction projects.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Chartered Engineer (CEng) status or working towards it (IET, CIBSE).
  • LIA (Lighting Industry Association) training or similar lighting certification.
  • Experience with smart lighting systems, DALI controls, KNX, or IoT-based lighting solutions.
  • Knowledge of UK sustainability and energy frameworks such as BREEAM and TM54.
