Signalling Principles Designer

United Kingdom

Overview

AtkinsRéalis is a global leader in design, engineering, and project management. We build world class teams that challenge convention and help shape a better future for our planet and its people. If you're ready to elevate your career, this is your opportunity to do so within an organisation backed by 80+ years of expertise and strong leadership support.

We are currently looking for enthusiastic and detail-oriented Signalling Principles Designers to join our Complex Projects Rail Systems Business across multiple UK locations, including Glasgow, York, Birmingham and Swindon. We offer flexible working options, including hybrid arrangements, and modern, newly opened offices to ensure a collaborative and high quality working environment.

As part of the Complex Projects Rail Systems team, you'll gain exposure to all stages of project delivery—feasibility, option selection, detailed design, installation support, testing and project closeout. You will work on a wide range of challenging and impactful signalling projects, such as the Havant resign Alling programme, using the latest interlocking, control systems and our Advanced Signalling Method (ASM). You may also contribute to multidisciplinary design packages for station upgrades, track renewals, level crossing improvements and consultancy assignments. Wherever your strengths lie, your experience will be valued, and you'll have the opportunity to grow and reach your full potential at AtkinsRéalis.

Your role

  • Support design delivery activities across all stages of the project lifecycle—from inception through completion.
  • Prepare and produce signalling designs, specifications, and reports, applying solid first principal engineering knowledge.
  • Ensure all deliverables comply with company procedures, contractual obligations, statutory requirements, and agreed timelines.
  • Coordinate and liaise with clients, stakeholders, and external railway contractors to support project progress.
  • Provide mentorship, guidance, and day-to-day support for junior team members.
  • Engage in technical collaboration with multidisciplinary internal teams and other groups within the wider Atkins organisation.
  • Maintain and enhance existing skills and competencies, demonstrating commitment to continuous professional development.
  • Receive structured support for IRSE licence progression, including workplace and competence assessments carried out in-house.
  • Access opportunities to gain secondary competencies, such as testing qualifications or other relevant certifications.
  • Benefit from training, mentorship, and project experience aimed at developing readiness for senior design management, CRE roles, or engineering management positions, including support for IRSE examinations.
