Structural engineering and inspection: Marc-Antoine’s journey from technical degree to innovation

Meet Marc-Antoine, a structural engineer and structural inspection and asset management expert at AtkinsRéalis in Canada. Let's learn about his passion for structural analysis and improving systems, as well as his rich journey and experience contributing to a wide range of innovative projects.

From technical degree to construction engineering

After graduating from ÉTS in Montreal in 2019, I joined AtkinsRéalis in 2020 as a structural engineer and currently work in the asset management team. Through my academic journey, including time spent studying social sciences, I discovered an interest in more material matters which, in turn, fuelled my passion for civil engineering. After completing a technical degree in civil engineering, I pursued a bachelor's degree in construction engineering, combining my analytical and problem-solving affinities with my desire to acquire skills useful for community development. Today, my job allows me to contribute not only to public safety, but also to effective infrastructure management.

Structural engineering and inspection: Marc-Antoine’s journey from technical degree to innovation

Task diversity, tool development and problem solving

I appreciate the wide range of tasks I get to perform as a structural engineer, such as inspection, load-bearing capacity assessment, asset management, IT tool development and design. I enjoy working outdoors, exploring different environments and working at heights using rope access techniques.

I like developing tools to simplify our tasks and reduce repetition. I believe this is essential for delivering efficient services, but also making our work more enjoyable and stimulating. I like using my professional judgment, which I've honed over time, to solve problems and develop appropriate systems and methods.

Benefits of a collaborative and flexible work environment

The office design and team-building activities foster a pleasant work environment. I like being able to travel a bit and have some flexibility in my work schedule. I also particularly appreciate the general openness to new ideas and the opportunity to share constructive suggestions with my managers.

Diversified inspection and technology development projects

My team's main activity consists in inspecting road and railway structures, including bridges, tunnels, walls, culverts and other ancillary structures. Our projects involve both public and private clients a wide territory stretching across the province to regions like Nunavik, James Bay, southern Quebec and the Gaspé Peninsula, as well as New Brunswick.

A landmark project in which I'm involved incudes the structures of the Réseau express métropolitain (REM), where I'm helping to develop an asset management system to improve inspection methods and propose innovative solutions adapted to clients' needs. We are also developing computer tools integrating artificial intelligence and various programming languages to improve our processes.
