We are looking for an energetic and experienced Associate Director for Bioresources Process Engineering to join our Design team within the Design & Advanced Technology (D&AT) Practice of AtkinsRéalis. As a key member of our technical team, you'll play a vital role in shaping and delivering transformational programmes of critical infrastructure for our Bioresource market clients across all feedstocks, including sewage sludge, food and food wastes, dairy, drinks and beverages, industrial, etc. You'll be part of a talented, multi-disciplinary team delivering cutting edge, iconic projects across water sector engineering at home (UK) and abroad. Projects like Strongford STW Net Zero, Scottish Water Resource Recovery Facility, NEOM, Hong Kong I-PARK1 waste to energy, Quebec City food waste to energy and ammonium sulphate, and many more.

We offer hybrid working which involves 3 days per week being office/site based. As Associate Director, you will be a technical leader, meaning your role will involve travel within the UK to client and other AtkinsRéalis offices. Occasional international travel to clients and conferences may also be required. This position can be based in any of the following of our offices in the UK: Manchester, Bristol, London, Epsom, Peterborough, Birmingham or Cambridge.
Your role
As an Associate Director Bioresources Process in the D&AT practice, the successful candidate would have the following responsibilities:
- Provide visible representation of your and Bioresources Process Engineering Design technical expertise to our current and prospective clients.
- Able to collaborate with stakeholders at all levels, including internal and external clients, operational staff, project teams, or their external stakeholders
- Lead, coordinate or manage members of a team of Process engineers for delivery of technical design work on small to complex multi‑disciplinary projects following relevant national and project specific design codes and standards, and to high‑quality levels in all areas of waste water and bioresource treatment process and principles – conventional and advance treatment technologies, liquids and gasses, as well as heat.
- Responsible for managing the production and review of technical deliverables such as design reports, process calculations, process control philosophies, etc.
- Lead on the development of project design deliverables for Process aspects of complex multi‑disciplinary projects and work, with the project management team, to successfully manage time and budgets to key project milestones and programmes.
- Proactively identify opportunities for cross‑selling and business growth, using commercial insight to strengthen and expand client relationships and selling our value proposition to clients.
- Work closely with teams within AtkinsRéalis with overlapping and complimentary services, who provide strategic services, policy and regulation advice, operations and maintenance expertise, to ensure lessons learnt in their projects are incorporated as lessons learnt into bioresources projects' design development.
- Provide Technical Leadership within discipline for the regional and national D&AT practice and influence D&AT Practice wide initiatives and recommend best practices to improve internal processes and services.
- Grow, develop, and manage the Process Engineering capabilities within the regional and/or national practice.
- Work independently with guidance in only the most challenging situations. Exercise personal judgement to solve difficult problems where appropriate and provide guidance to junior team members.
- Advise client, operational, project, or service activities within project teams and wider D&AT Practice initiatives.
- Manage or collaborate on technical aspects of bid proposals.
- Provide mentorship to less experienced colleagues and help to grow the Process Engineering capabilities within the process team.
- Work closely with and within a multi‑disciplinary team in the UK and overseas to deliver integrated design solutions.
- Adhere to quality assurance standards in design including check and review of your own work as well as others.

About you
You would be a well-rounded and versatile individual who exemplifies the following key skills and attributes:
- Chartered Engineer, preferably IChemE or CIWEM.
- A degree in Chemical Engineering or equivalent (e.g. Environmental, Water and Waste water engineering, etc.).
- Demonstrates in‑depth knowledge and broad expertise in Process engineering treatment processes and principles e.g. advanced anaerobic digestion, advanced thermal conversion (ATC), etc. Examples of ATC processes include pyrolysis, gasification, incineration, HTC, HTL, etc. Expert understanding of the integrated nature of treatment processes and principles and their impact on emissions-, odour-, heat-, pressure-, carbon and energy management, required as a minimum.
- Experience in the UK Water Industry is recommended.
- Proven experience in leading large-scale, complex process engineering design delivery, including within a multi-disciplinary environment. Demonstrably experience of integrating elements as part of an existing or new treatment process into an existing treatment process is required.
- Takes broad perspective to identify innovative solutions to design problems.
- Demonstrates exemplary communication skills, with the ability to convey complex technical concepts clearly and effectively to diverse stakeholder.
- Expert knowledge of current design codes and standards as well as industry best practices including, including CDM Regulations.
- Experience of design and delivery of projects with adherence to UK safety and environmental regulations, process safety techniques (e.g. HAZOP), knowledge of capital and operational costs - and risk assessments, as well as whole life carbon assessments. Demonstrable experience of international design delivery to ensure operational safety is recommended.
- A proactive, highly motivated mindset with a collaborative approach to drive teamwork and shared success across projects and the wider practice.
- Design experience in bringing a first-of-a-kind technology to construction and commissioning would be advantageous.
- Commercially astute, with experience shaping winning proposals would be advantageous.
