Fuel Engineering Specialist

Overview

Candu Energy Inc., is looking for a Specialist Fuel Engineering to be a part of our team in the Fuel and Physics department supporting the design of new nuclear power plants and the operation and refurbishment of existing CANDU nuclear power plants.

Your role

  • Lead, plan, perform, document, review, and/or verify technical analyses related to fuel design, fuel thermal hydraulics, fuel operation and safety and fuel cycles.

  • Interface with other interfacing skills including deterministic safety analysis, physics, ROP, fuel channel and fuel handling .

  • Develop the analysis basis plans, design verification plan; design requirements, technical specifications, etc. for fuel.

  • Develop design and analysis codes. Verify and validate codes and produce high quality reports effectively summarizing technical information.

  • Present results to internal and/or external stakeholders. Collate, assimilate, and summarize results from existing analyses.

  • Act as authority specializing in fuel design; interact with the Utilities - addressing emergent issues and providing solutions.

  • Follow the relevant procedures, guidelines and standards governing the work being performed. Attend and participate in meetings at the office, remotely, or at client sites as needed.

About you

  • Master'S or Ph.D. degree or equivalent in Engineering or Science from a university of recognized standing;

  • A minimum of 15 years of relevant experience (experience obtained in advanced degree programs will be considered for applicability against this requirement);

  • Must be conversant with computer environments; proficiency in both Linux and WINDOWS environments is a strong asset, experience in licensing activities would also be an asset;

  • Proficient in finite element analysis and use of LS-DYNA/ANSYS for performing stress analyses;

  • Developing models and performing seismic analysis;

  • Broad knowledge of thermal-fluid sciences (mechanical, fluid flow, heat transfers, multi-phase flow and thermodynamics), familiarity and experience with some of the fuel design and safety computer codes such as ELESTRES, TUBRUPT, NUCIRC, CATHENA and ANSYS, proficiency in computer programming, especially FORTRAN;

  • Good knowledge of the CANDU design, with particular emphasis on the fuel design and operation, heat transport system and plant control, containment and moderator systems would be an asset and underlying engineering principles and practices, excellent oral and written communication skills are required;

  • Knowledge of light water reactors, and small modular reactors is desirable

  • Knowledge of the technical specification requirements for natural uranium, slightly enriched uranium and mixed oxide fuel

  • Ability to work well under pressure and be flexible, i.e., must be able to perform varied work assignments effectively and respond quickly to changing project needs, to show initiative while working in a team environment, to work to budget and schedule;

  • Must be willing to travel occasionally to participate in meetings and workshops, full commitment to working in a formal QA environment
