Senior Fuel Handling Engineer

Overview

AtkinsRéalis is looking to hire a Senior Fuel Handling Engineer. This position requires experienced individuals who are self-starter capable of working independently and leading/supervising junior engineers. The individuals will work in a fast-paced team environment performing engineering services for Nuclear Power Plants within a matrix organization.

Your role

  • Perform conceptual and detailed engineering design for fuel handling mechanical equipment and associated D2O, hydraulic and pneumatic systems.
  • Provide technical leadership to multidisciplinary teams throughout design, procurement, manufacturing, assembly, testing and commissioning activities.
  • Prepare, review and approve design requirements, technical specifications, calculations, drawings, test plans, commissioning procedures and regulatory submission packages.
  • Perform engineering analyses, including component sizing, flow network analysis, stress analysis and heat load assessments, to support design integrity and compliance.
  • Define scope of work, plan and coordinate engineering activities, monitor progress, manage priorities and maintain effective communication with clients, suppliers and internal stakeholders.
  • Apply applicable engineering standards, codes, procedures and professional judgement to resolve complex technical issues and develop practical, compliant solutions.
  • Provide pre-order and post-order engineering support, including cost estimates, quotation requests, technical evaluations, purchase requisitions and disposition of design deviations or non-conformances.
  • Coordinate technical interfaces with engineering disciplines, drafting, quality surveillance, manufacturing, assembly, testing organizations, clients and suppliers.
  • Lead or participate in technical meetings, site visits and supplier visits to support design development, issue resolution and project execution.
  • Provide guidance and mentorship to junior engineers, including work review, task assignment, schedule support and contribution to staff development activities.
  • Conduct site visits at nuclear generating stations and suppliers.
  • Provide engineering support to quality surveillance, manufacturing, assembly and testing with non-conformances.
  • Evaluate the completeness and status of delivered equipment.

About you

  • Degree in Mechanical Engineering from an accredited university
  • Minimum of 10 years of experience in machine design, automation, equipment, tooling, fluid power, hydraulic control or water process control design
  • Minimum 5 years in nuclear industry.
  • Registered Professional Engineer in Ontario.
  • Strong knowledge of machine mechanics, mechanics of materials, material selection and machine component design.
  • Strong knowledge of fluid mechanics and process control design, including open- and closed-loop hydraulic circuits.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Experience working collaboratively in a dynamic, team-oriented environment.
  • Ability to work effectively under pressure, meet tight deadlines, respond to urgent situations and travel as required.
  • Knowledge of pressure boundary work, including pressure vessel design, analysis, code classification, code class boundary, non-destructive examination and design registration.
  • Knowledge of ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code Sections II, III, V, VIII and IX.
  • Knowledge of CSA N285.0 requirements for pressure-retaining systems and components in CANDU nuclear power plants.
  • Knowledge of CSA B51 requirements for boilers, pressure vessels and pressure piping.
  • Knowledge of ASME Y14.5 dimensioning and tolerancing standards.
  • Presentation and public speaking skills.
  • Knowledge of seismic and environmental qualification methods and processes.
