Specialist Electrical Engineer

Overview

The Specialist Electrical Engineer provides advanced technical expertise and leadership for the design, modification, maintenance, and life‑extension of electrical systems supporting CANDU nuclear generating stations. The role ensures engineering excellence, regulatory compliance, and safe, reliable plant operation while supporting multidisciplinary project teams.

Your role

  • Provide subject matter expertise in power distribution, protection and control, standby power systems, and plant electrical equipment.
  • Prepare and review engineering calculations, system studies, technical specifications, and design change packages.
  • Perform system assessments including load flow, short‑circuit, protection coordination, arc‑flash hazard analysis, harmonic analysis, surge protection and system reliability studies.
  • Support equipment qualification, environmental/seismic assessments, and aging management programs.
  • Interface with operations, maintenance, licensing, and safety teams to resolve complex technical issues.
  • Ensure compliance with nuclear codes, standards, and regulatory requirements.
  • Provide technical oversight of vendors, contractors, and junior engineers.
  • Support commissioning, testing, troubleshooting, and plant start‑up activities.
  • Contribute to risk assessments, failure investigations, and corrective action programs.
  • Perform engineering work following AtkinsRéalis /Candu Energy procedures and QA programs, and applicable codes, standards, and regulatory requirements.
  • Coordinate and interface with client(s), suppliers, stakeholders and other design disciplines to execute assigned engineering work.
  • Become involved in conceptual, preliminary and/or detailed design phases to support CANDU and other Nuclear electrical systems and modifications.
  • Provide input to technical documents, that include engineering drawings (including GAs, DDs, EDs), change paper markups, calculations, design/analysis reports, design requirements, design manuals, bill of materials, design specifications, technical specifications, component specification sheets, commissioning specifications, etc.
  • Participate in review of interfacing discipline's documentation.
  • Provide input to requisitions or Engineering Quotation Requests (EQR) for equipment and materials to support procurement.
  • Interface and provide technical guidance and instruction to designers/drafters.
  • Supervise, coordinate and review the work of junior and assistant engineers/designers, prepare estimates, monitor schedules and assigning work to team members to meet completion dates.
  • Prepare scope of work and provide input to bid proposals.
  • Perform field walk-downs during different design phases and prepare Walkdown reports as required.
  • Assist with field construction and execution activities, such as: field changes, design revisions, commissioning, AFS, closeout, etc.
  • Complete the assigned scopes or tasks within given budget and schedule, and in good quality.
  • Provide prompt response and engineering resolutions on any critical engineering related matters.

About you

  • Engineering Degree in Electrical Engineering from an accredited university or equivalent degree as recognized by Professional Engineers Ontario (PEO).
  • Registered as a Professional Engineer in the Province of Ontario.
  • 20+ years of related work experience in electrical engineering with significant experience in nuclear or large industrial power systems.
  • Experience with specifying requirements for cyber security, software qualification, and EMI/RFI in compliance with nuclear codes and standards as they apply to electrical equipment.
  • Experience with commercially available practices for advanced condition monitoring of electrical equipment.
  • Experience with nuclear safety‑related electrical systems and design change control processes.
  • Experience with medium voltage and low voltage power distribution systems, including preparation of Single Line diagrams, Elementary Diagrams, Wiring Diagrams, Cable Block Diagrams and schedules, and calculation of power demand/electrical load lists.
  • Experience with transformer sizing, cable sizing, circuit breaker sizing calculations.
  • Experience in modelling electrical power systems and use of analysis functions in ETAP, or other similar software programs is an asset.
  • Site experience in construction, or commissioning of electrical systems for nuclear or other heavy industries would be an asset.
  • In depth knowledge and experience of CANDU nuclear electrical power systems.
  • Strong knowledge of power system analysis, industrial power distribution, and high‑reliability electrical design.
  • In depth knowledge of applicable codes and standards, such as of CSA 22.1, Canadian Electrical Code Part I and The Ontario Electrical Safety Code (OESC).
  • Familiarity with Canadian nuclear codes and standards, and engineering governance experience.
  • Familiar with specifying and procurement support for electrical equipment such as oil filled and dry type transformers, medium voltage and low voltage switchgear, MCCs, MV & LV motors, MV & LV variable frequency drives, low voltage distribution load centers, UPS systems including rectifiers and inverters and diesel generators (emergency power and standby power), power and control and instrumentation cables.
  • Shall have specialized technical knowledge to resolve complex engineering issues or technical problems.
  • Shall have excellent communication and technical writing skills and good ability to interact and communicate (both verbal and in writing) professionally with colleagues, clients and contractors.
  • Demonstrate strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work in a multidisciplinary team environment.
  • Availability to travel for short periods of time to jobsites, client or partner offices or Vendor facilities may be required.
