Specialist Instrumentation and Controls Engineer

Overview

A Senior Instrumentation and Controls (I&C) specialist engineer is required to work on the design and development of I&C systems on projects involving new designs and/or enhancements to CANDU plants and other nuclear installations.

Your role

  • Perform conceptual and/or detailed design of CANDU instrumentation and control systems and modifications thereof, including definition of system functional and performance requirements and control algorithms, definition of control logic and wiring arrangements, control parameters, setpoints, instrument ranges and environmental qualification and seismic qualification.
  • Perform specification, sizing, and selection for various types of I&C components, and produce component related documentation including assessment documents, setpoint calculations, error analyses, technical specifications, etc.
  • Update and/or prepare I&C engineering design documents including design requirements, design description, elementary diagrams, functional specifications, etc., together with the supporting analysis/assessment documents and other design basis documents.
  • Provide input to the drawing office for the preparation of various I&C related engineering drawings such as general arrangement drawings, instrument loop diagrams, wiring and connection diagrams, bills of materials, etc.
  • Provide or update wiring and technical design input to computerized wiring programs.
  • Interface with various engineering disciplines, suppliers, clients and other areas of the company as the prime I&C technical expert.
  • Provide responses to technical enquiries from design review teams and regulatory agencies.
  • Provide technical support to engineering groups at site.
  • Assist in developing engineering standards and internal procedures for the company.
  • Deliver technical presentations accurately and effectively.
  • Manage assigned work effectively, including prioritizing, executing, managing schedule and budget, and reporting, to meet project goals.
  • Develop and provide training and mentorship to senior and junior engineering team members.

About you

  • Relevant Honours degree in a relevant field of engineering from a university of recognized standing.
  • Member in good standing of the Professional Engineers of Ontario (P.Eng).
  • Experience commensurate with the grade level, with a minimum of 20 years of pertinent engineering experience.
  • Experience with methodologies and processes used for I&C modernization of a nuclear power plant especially safety significant and nuclear instrumentation systems and processes design.
  • Experience at an operating nuclear power station is not required, but would be an asset.
  • Demonstrate exceptional technical skills and problem-solving capabilities, and be able to seek practical solutions to engineering problems.
  • Exceptional knowledge and experience with instrumentation and control system functions, configurations and equipment as used for CANDU plant process systems, safety systems or safety-related systems.
  • Strong knowledge with industrial/nuclear QA programs and procedures along with pertinent CSA, IEEE, or related I&C engineering codes and standards. Membership of a pertinent technical standards committee would be an asset.
  • Recognition as an authority in one or more I&C engineering specialties with liaisons to organizations in the nuclear industry.
  • Demonstrate strong leadership and interpersonal skills as well as a strong customer focus and the ability to work in a multidisciplinary team environment.
