How Justin Kim is shaping the future of engineering at AtkinsRéalis

Meet Justin Kim, a Graduate Consultant whose career trajectory at AtkinsRéalis is all about seizing opportunities. Based in Hong Kong's office as part of the System Engineering & Assurance team, Justin's story demonstrates how the right company culture can accelerate professional growth beyond expectations.

After completing his bachelor's degree at the University of Hong Kong, Justin made a pivotal decision that would shape his career. Rather than returning to Korea (where he is based), he chose to stay in Hong Kong, drawn by the promise of international experiences and diverse opportunities. That choice has paid dividends in ways he never anticipated.

Rising to the challenge: When opportunity meets preparation

Four months into his tenure, Justin faced what many would consider a career-defining challenge. As team priorities shifted and some senior colleagues temporarily stepped back to focus on strategic initiatives and personal commitments, Justin found himself stepping into responsibilities that extended well beyond typical graduate-level expectations. The workload was overwhelming, but Justin viewed it as an opportunity rather than an obstacle.

With support from colleagues, he adapted quickly, developing crucial skills in project management and time prioritization. This early trial by fire transformed him from a recent graduate into a seasoned professional, capable of handling the complex demands of multiple concurrent projects.

Leading innovation

Currently managing ten different projects, Justin finds excitement in one of the high-profile initiatives that positions AtkinsRéalis at the forefront of sustainable transportation technology. "This project stands out as a pioneer in adopting green fuels and new virtual guidance technology, utilizing hydrogen fuel trains," Justin explains. The initiative showcases the energy sources that will power future transportation systems, and Justin's team provides crucial system assurance consulting across all railway system scopes.

Beyond engineering: Building lasting connections

Justin's proudest accomplishment might surprise you, it happened on the water, not in the office. Participating in Hong Kong's dragon boat festival with colleagues, the team committed to biweekly training sessions for months. Their dedication culminated in winning the merit prize in the Men's Silver Cup and the “Best Dressed” team (with a TV feature).

"While the award is a point of pride, the true value lies in the teamwork and lasting memories we created together," Justin notes. This experience exemplifies the horizontal working culture he values most about AtkinsRéalis—a stark contrast to the hierarchical structures he knew in Korea.

A culture that accelerates growth

What sets AtkinsRéalis apart, according to Justin, is genuine equality regardless of role or seniority. "Relationships are genuinely horizontal, and everyone is treated equally with mutual respect," he observes. This environment fosters open communication and collaboration while allowing meaningful professional discussions and genuine friendships to flourish.

The company supports this growth through structured programs and innovative solutions. For engineering graduates, AtkinsRéalis offers comprehensive training programs, and even when standard pathways don't fit, the company finds alternatives. Justin benefits from mentorship by chartered engineers from globally recognized organizations like iMechE and EIT, along with specialized training opportunities like NEC4 ECC Technical Training for Young Professionals.

Innovation and opportunity

Justin sees both challenges and opportunities ahead for the engineering industry. While keeping pace with technological advancements and increasing client expectations presents difficulties, it also creates space for companies like AtkinsRéalis to lead through innovation.

"By staying at the forefront of emerging technologies, such as AI, digital twins, and advanced design tools, the company can offer cutting-edge solutions that set it apart from competitors," he explains. The emphasis on green engineering and sustainable solutions positions the firm advantageously for future growth.
