Offshore Substation Lead Engineer

Overview

AtkinsRéalis one of the world's leading providers of engineering professional consulting and support services with offices across Ireland is seeking to continue our growth to support the ongoing implementation of the Irish National Development Plan.

We have an opportunity for an experienced professional to work on a major offshore wind farm project in Ireland. The individual will join our exciting and fast-moving Infrastructure team as we continue our growth into the Energy market. The successful candidate will work directly within our Project Delivery Practice and shall be ideally based in our Dublin or one of our Irish offices, with the option to work remotely within Ireland in a hybrid work environment.

We currently have a vacancy for an Offshore Substation (OSS) Lead Engineer for an Offshore Windfarm Project. The OSS Engineer is responsible for the technical leadership, management and coordination of all engineering activities associated with the Offshore Substation package throughout the project lifecycle, from FEED through procurement, detailed design, fabrication, installation, commissioning and handover.

The role is responsible for leading and coordinating OSS package engineering activities and ensuring that engineering solutions are safe, compliant, deliverable and aligned with technical, operational and commercial objectives, as well as the wider offshore transmission system requirements.

The OSS Engineer will manage multidisciplinary engineering interfaces across electrical, structural, marine, mechanical, geotechnical, HVAC, control and protection disciplines and will work closely with development, procurement, package management, operations, legal, consenting and stakeholder teams. The successful candidate will provide technical oversight of contractors, consultants, Owner's'Engineers and certification bodies, ensuring engineering quality and governance are maintained throughout all phases of project delivery. Work closely with the Engineering Manager to ensure OSS engineering activities are aligned with technical standards and assurance requirements.

Your role

Technical Leadership

  • Act as the engineering lead for the Offshore Substation package.
  • Provide technical leadership throughout FEED, detailed design, fabrication, installation and commissioning.
  • Ensure the OSS design is safe, reliable, operable, maintainable and compliant with applicable standards and regulations.
  • Lead technical decision-making for OSS package matters and support resolution of engineering issues affecting package delivery, escalating decisions with cross-package, programme or system-wide implications.
  • Drive engineering optimisation and value engineering opportunities while maintaining project objectives.
  • Ensure OSS engineering solutions are aligned with overall offshore transmission system requirements and project objectives.
  • Assess OSS design decisions for impacts on adjacent packages, operational performance, programme delivery, lifecycle cost and future asset management.
  • Escalate technical issues that may impact wider project performance, safety, operability, maintainability or compliance.

Engineering Management

  • Develop and implement the OSS package engineering execution plan in alignment with package strategy.
  • Coordinate multidisciplinary engineering activities across all OSS disciplines.
  • Ensure engineering deliverables are delivered on schedule and to the required quality.
  • Monitor contractor and other consultant performance against technical requirements.
  • Review and endorse OSS engineering deliverables in accordance with the project engineering assurance and approval processes.
  • Ensure lessons learned and industry best practices are incorporated into project delivery.
  • Support development and maintenance of project-wide technical requirements and engineering management processes.
  • Collaborate with Package Engineers and the Project Engineering Manager to ensure technical consistency across all transmission assets.
  • Contribute to project-level engineering reviews, technical governance forums and key design assurance activities

Interface Management

Manage technical interfaces between:

  • OSS package.
  • Offshore export cable package.
  • Onshore substation package.
  • Wind farm developers.
  • Marine operations.
  • Grid connection systems.
  • Operational stakeholders.
  • Ensure interface risks are identified and effectively managed.
  • Support interface workshops and technical alignment meetings.
  • Support management of technical interfaces and risks that extend beyond the OSS package boundary.

Contractor and Supplier Management

  • Provide technical support during procurement activities.
  • Participate in tender evaluations and technical assessments.
  • Support contract negotiations from a technical perspective.
  • Review contractor proposals and assess technical compliance.
  • Manage technical queries, concessions, deviations and change requests.

Stakeholder Management

  • Act as a key technical representative for the OSS package.
  • Engage with internal and external stakeholders including:
    • Wind farm developer.
    • Certification bodies.
    • Marine warranty surveyors.
    • Owner's'Engineer.
    • Supply chain partners.
  • Present engineering recommendations and technical decisions to project management and governance forums.

Technical Assurance and Risk Management

  • Ensure compliance with applicable standards, regulations and project requirements.
  • Support design assurance and independent verification processes.
  • Lead identification and mitigation of technical risks.
  • Ensure safety through design principles are implemented.
  • Support HAZID, HAZOP, constructability and operational reviews.

Construction and Commissioning Support

  • Support fabrication, installation and commissioning activities.
  • Review construction methodologies and engineering changes.
  • Provide technical support during offshore campaigns.
  • Support testing, energisation and handover activities.
  • Ensure operational requirements are incorporated into final asset delivery.

  • Extensive experience in offshore transmission or offshore wind infrastructure projects.
  • Strong understanding of offshore substations, HV systems and grid connection infrastructure.
  • Experience managing multidisciplinary engineering teams and interfaces.
  • Experience working through FEED, detailed design and construction phases of major infrastructure projects.
  • Strong understanding of offshore project execution strategies and contractor delivery models.
  • Experience managing Engineering, Procurement, Construction and Installation (EPCI) contractors.
  • Knowledge of offshore design standards and certification requirements.
  • Experience reviewing and approving complex engineering deliverables.
  • Excellent stakeholder engagement and communication skills.

Required Qualifications

  • Minimum Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering, Structural Engineering, or a related engineering discipline.
  • Chartership.
  • Safe Pass.
  • Relevant years of experience as Offshore Substation Engineer wind projects.
  • Demonstrated experience in a senior engineering leadership role.
  • Demonstrated experience in offshore substations, HV transmission systems or large offshore energy infrastructure projects.
