6 tips for rapid progression
Hello, I’m Ratnadeep. I work at AtkinsRéalis' Global Technology Centre (GTC) in Bengaluru. While I hadn't held any senior roles before, I started as a Senior Digital Developer and swiftly advanced to Associate Group Software Engineer!
In this blog, I share 6 ways you can rapidly grow the career you want at AtkinsRéalis:
1. Always say yes to new opportunities
I was initially hired for engineering automation, which is quite different from software development. I felt it didn't offer much room for growth or exploration. My manager recognized this and switched me to a full-stack development project. At first, I was unsure about the change. However, my manager encouraged me to "never turn down new opportunities." He said I could continue contributing to engineering automation while exploring new avenues.
2. Remember: at AtkinsRéalis dedication leads to recognition
I joined a team developing the Design Production Manager (DPM) software, which includes three key products: Master Information Delivery Plan (MIDP), Production Planner, and Production Manager. I was initially assigned to the MIDP project, working closely with a UK colleague. The project evolved into a comprehensive portfolio supported by about 12 GTC team members. My deep knowledge and early involvement made me the project's main point of contact. This recognition ultimately led to my appointment as Portfolio Lead.
3. Take on the responsibilities you enjoy
Over the past two years, I've balanced engineering automation projects with my DPM responsibilities. The full-stack nature of DPM is challenging but rewarding. As I led DPM, I also became involved with emerging engineering automation projects in the Digital team. With my extensive background in engineering automation, I naturally became the project's go-to person…
4. Proactively follow your interests
Recognizing the need to manage both areas effectively, the Digital Director supported my decision to recruit new members for the Engineering Automation team. By diversifying my expertise, I mastered both domains and had the opportunity to build and lead a team. My proactive approach caught the attention of senior management, leading to my promotion to the P3 level and enhancing my visibility within the organization.
5. Tell your leaders what you want for your career
My managers have consistently been open to discussion, approachable, and supportive, helping me grow personally and professionally. I focused on personal development, pushing myself to acquire new skills. At AtkinsRéalis, I discovered that my role involved more than just coding—effective communication was also essential, which I found rewarding.
6. Embrace AtkinsRéalis’ culture of continuous learning
I believe in the importance of continually upskilling—project-specific, and to stay abreast with the industry. As an Engineering Automation Expert, I took the initiative to learn Angular, .NET, and full-stack skills. While leading DPM projects, I made sure to keep my skills updated. If you're passionate about learning and technology, it's vital to continuously refresh your knowledge. Don't wait for opportunities to come to you. Staying updated can significantly enhance your career and positively impact all aspects of your life.
