insights Still going strong forty years on

Hello, I'm Adam. And, remarkably, I'm nearing my 40th anniversary with AtkinsRéalis! What started as an ‘apprentice’ as a trainee straight out of school has evolved into a fulfilling career, where I now serve as the Major Projects Resourcing and Business Integration Director. Over these four decades, I've witnessed and actively contributed to transformative changes within our Projects and Programme Services team. It's been an extraordinary journey of growing with the organization, shaping significant projects, and guiding the careers of countless talented individuals who've walked through our doors.

Here's my story.

"When I'm not at work, I enjoy beach holidays, BBQs with my family, a good book, playing golf (badly) or watching rugby!"

How it started

Forty years ago, just after I had taken my A levels, Legacy Faithful+Gould offered me a job as a Trainee Quantity Surveyor. In anticipation of not achieving the grades I needed for university... I took the job. I was thrilled to be sponsored for a degree at Bristol Polytechnic, studying on a day-release basis and following on to earn RICS accreditation!

How it's going

My career journey has enabled me to access and achieve academic qualifications, travel to the UK and Europe, and meet and make lifelong friendships. Over the years, our legacy organizations have seen many organizational changes. In the early 1990s, we co-located with Legacy Atkins teams at Aztec West, Bristol. I went from having 50 colleagues to over 400 based in Bristol with an associated raft of opportunities naturally opening up as a result The game changer was most recently when Legacy Faithful+Gould united as part of AtkinsRéalis, where, as part of the Project and Programme Services team, we now enjoy (literally) a world of career development, progression opportunities, and talented colleagues.

It's always been about people and projects

I have been involved with many brilliant projects over the years, and to name one would be unfair to all the others! Getting involved with significant national energy, defense, logistics & distribution and industrial projects has been rewarding. The most career-defining common denominator across my project work has involved resourcing and associated recruitment, particularly of school leavers, apprentices, graduates, and young professionals. I'm proud of how many have gone on to flourishing careers with AtkinsRéalis or elsewhere.

What I enjoy about our workplace culture

The recognition that we're not all the same underpins the whole team culture. Being different is okay—other views, experiences, and opinions enhance our abilities to provide value-added performance and better services.

Rewind the clock to when I joined what was a male-dominated chartered surveying practice from the multi-cultural global organization we are now; you recognize how far we've come through your day-to-day work.

There are real current examples that reinforce this; There hasn't been a single working week in the past year that didn't involve communication with colleagues in the Global Technology Centre in India: our focus on social value and consideration of how we can make a real difference to our communities through our work.
