West Sussex Fire and Rescue

West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service, an integrated part of West Sussex County Council, asked for our help as part of our appointment on an innovative multi-disciplinary consultant agreement, via the CCS framework. Following the statutory inspection, the council had allocated a budget for fire station improvements and wanted to achieve the best value from its investment. We used our strategic estate planning expertise to determine which elements of the buildings should be assessed. The focus was not just on the buildings themselves, but on how they are used and to what extent they support the service’s aims and values, including best practices around decontamination and firefighters’ health and well-being.

Chichester Festival

AtkinsRéalis were recommended to Chichester Festival Theatre by Historic England after we had successfully restored the Grade II* listed Congress Theatre in Eastbourne. We were appointed by CFT in 2016 to undertake a wide-reaching study of available repair techniques and approaches.

There were two key challenges. First, we needed to ensure our solution would not fail. Second, it was essential that the new repair should match the original concrete in situ as closely as possible. The overall modernist aesthetic of the theatre had to be maintained.

Department for Education

With a huge estate of schools across the UK, the Department for Education (DfE) needed to get an accurate overview of these assets. With more than 180 in-house building surveyors, we are industry leaders in delivering complex, national survey programmes. This led to AtkinsRéalis being one of four consultants appointed by the DofE as part of a team to deliver one of the largest ever Condition Data Collection (CDC) programmes in the UK. Between 2016 and 2019 all government-funded schools in England were surveyed. This involved around 22,000 schools with 63,000 buildings of over 78m m2 of floor space, plus 261 further education (FE) colleges with around 2m m2 of floor space.

Manchester Town Hall

Manchester Town Hall is, a much-loved Grade 1 listed landmark in the city, Built in 1877, it is one of the finest examples of Victorian Neo-Gothic architecture in the UK. The largest building in Albert Square, its imposing façade speaks with the authority of a long and distinguished history.

Behind the scenes, however, much is in need of repair and refurbishment. We are at the heart of this endeavour, an integral part of this £324m project working with a wider team to bring this important building and public square back to its former glory.

Edinburgh Futures

Our Appointment – due to our extensive experience with complex heritage refurbishment projects AtkinsRéalis were appointed to provide multidisciplinary services from inception. The Grade A-listed Old Royal Infirmary building lay dormant and uninhabited for over a decade accelerating its decay and deterioration. The building was in extremely poor condition, with significant asbestos, multiple layers of finishes, concealed rooms, structural instability and rot. Our strategy to derisk the development involved four enabling works packages to strip the building back to its original fabric. This structure minimised client exposure to significant prelims and potential overruns due to unknowns.

Birmingham City University

One of the many benefits of building a long-term relationship with a client is being able to share expert knowledge. It also allows us to hit the ground running because we understand and share our client’s core values. This really pays off when it comes to delivering large scale projects against a backdrop of complex technical challenges, pressing project programmes and political influences.

The City Campus redevelopment at Birmingham City University (BCU) in the heart of Birmingham’s Curzon Quarter is a good example of this. AtkinsRéalis were appointed to provide a diverse set of consultancy services on three key phased projects. The brief was to deliver a new campus that not only provided space efficiency savings but could also accommodate future growth and demand.
