How we champion a diverse, inclusive workplace
Embrace is a self-started employee resource group (ERG) that provides a community for ethnic minority colleagues and allies at AtkinsRéalis. Embrace seeks to better understand the challenges affecting ethnic minority employees, to enable discussion around their lived experiences, the challenges faced and ideas around solutions in a supportive environment. The network welcomes any employee who wants to shape a more inclusive work culture.
"To me, Embrace is all about celebrating our differences and positively impacting the business in representing our ethnic minority community."
—Ramona, Consultant

Empowering events
Embrace wants to engage with all colleagues and holds numerous internal events to educate around the cultures of our employees, highlight our many role models and to provide opportunities to discuss sensitive issues around race.
Embrace is also involved in many external events to broaden reach and help influence our wider society in a positive way. Embrace also supports other ERGs with similar goals.
Engaging the team
Embrace's vibrant meet-ups are great opportunities to celebrate diverse cultures, meet role models, and have open discussions. In addition to lots of events and activities around national events such as Black History Month and Race Equality Week, some of Embrace's recent highlights include Advancing Your Career webinars, coffee mornings, summer barbecues, book club, and Show Your Culture lunches. We also host a Development Action Plan Clinic that puts junior employees in front of top career experts.
Industry outreach
Embrace members are passionate about using their voices for change across the engineering and construction industry. They lean on AtkinsRéalis' resources to support like-minded groups through events and media campaigns. Collaborating with BPIC's Careers in Construction campaign, team members shared their professional journeys to help inspire diverse young talent. As part of AFBELive! 2024, our very own Dr. Nira Chamberlain spoke on The Math that Can Stop an AI Apocalypse. And for Black History Month 2023, the ERG collaborated with Rolls-Royce, Airbus, and MBDA for a Breaking Boundaries event to enhance ethnic diversity in the aerospace sector.
"Embrace is about bringing people from different backgrounds together to push for change. Many people assume that the ethnic minority experience in the workplace is uniform when there is so much diversity in it."
—Aditya, Senior Mechanical Engineer
Enabling progression for ethnic minority employees
Top of the Embrace agenda is exploring ways to level the playing field for colleagues and to support and drive a culture of continuous progression. Embrace encourages our popular THRIVE and INSPIRE programs for its members. These programs are designed to help you grow the skills needed to step up into a senior role. The ERG also understands that there is no one ethnic minority experience, so, it supports its fellow ERGs across many intersectional issues, including empowerment for women, employees with disabilities, and LGBTQ+ and Faith communities.
Different makes a difference
Everything Embrace does aligns with our global ED&I program - Different Makes a Difference. So, at key forums such as our business roundtables, Embrace invites ethnic minority colleagues to candidly share their experiences and thoughts on sometimes challenging topics. These have included the work environment, team inclusivity, leadership, and organization policies. Thanks to discussions like these, Embrace supports and helps the organization gauge where we stand and what further changes need to be made to make ourselves a truly inclusive company.

ENGAGE: Supportive engagement
At the heart of Embrace is a strong and inclusive community. Members, allies, and non-members enjoy connecting in our culturally rich workplace, together. Embrace also gives ethnic minority colleagues a safe space to openly voice concerns. The group hosts regular cultural events and collaborates with senior leaders to enhance talent retention and ensure every team member feels valued.
EMPOWER: empowerment for all
Embrace's mission is to empower cultural awareness and understanding across AtkinsRéalis. The employee group supports its members' progression through mentorship, instilling the confidence to have difficult yet positive conversations about ED&I. By engaging senior leaders on ED&I, we increase the visibility of ethnic minority role models, boost mentorship opportunities, and support diversity in leadership roles.
ENABLE: enable progress and integrity
Embrace's collaboration with senior leadership has led to actionable changes in policies and practices, improving workplace inclusivity and reducing turnover among ethnic minority employees. Embrace has shaped our ED&I strategy by providing feedback and collaborating with consultants, empowering ethnic minority staff to pursue senior roles and career growth. Embrace ensures colleagues can thrive by promoting a trusting environment and providing access to the tools and platforms.
"I reverse-mentor a senior leader on ED&I-related topics. It's a great way for me to be heard as a junior colleague and share my experience as an ethnic minority person."
—Karina, Assistant Structural Engineer
