Vice President, EC6 Product Development

Mississauga, Ontario, Canada | Pickering, Ontario, Canada

Overview

The Vice President, EC6 Product Development provides executive leadership to maintain the EC6 design in a state of commercial and proposal readiness, supporting competitive deployments through targeted refinements, bid compliance, and market‑driven updates. This role is accountable for refining the existing EC6 product across the full pre‑execution lifecycle, including design optimization, engineering definition, cost and schedule baselining, constructability planning, supply chain and procurement strategies, and overall delivery readiness, up to, but not including project execution. A core focus of the role is ensuring that the EC6 design is technically robust, licensable, competitive, and execution‑ready, with clearly defined cost, schedule, and risk profiles suitable for competitive bids.

The purpose of the Vice President, EC6 Product Development position is to provide visionary leadership and strategic oversight for Candu Energy's'EC6 product development program, ensuring the CANDU EC6 design is refined, and well positioned to meet the demands of a rapidly evolving global nuclear landscape. This role is accountable for advancing the existing EC6 product definition to a state of deployment readiness that supports informed customer decision‑making and future project execution.

CANDU EC6 (Enhanced CANDU 6) is one of the latest evolution of Canada's proven CANDU reactor technology. It is a ~700 MWe class, Generation III+ heavy‑water nuclear reactor designed to deliver reliable baseload electricity with enhanced safety, constructability, and operating performance. The EC6 product is separate from the Candu MONARK under current development but has a key emerging strategic fit for many possible clients.

Key characteristics:

  • Heavy‑water moderated and cooled, pressure‑tube reactor.
  • Uses natural uranium fuel, with flexibility to use recycled fuels (e.g., RU, MOX, thorium).
  • On‑power refuelling, enabling high capacity factors.
  • Enhanced passive safety features, meeting modern international regulatory expectations.
  • Based on operating CANDU 6 fleet, with design improvements rather than first‑of‑a‑kind risk.

The design emphasizes deployability, grid suitability for mid‑sized systems, and local supply‑chain participation, which has historically been a strong value proposition for new nuclear countries.

Design maturity:

The EC6 is a fully defined reference plant, derived from operating CANDU 6 units (e.g., Qinshan Phase III in China) and updated to Generation III+ standards. It is not an SMR, but a full‑scale reactor optimized for countries seeking proven large‑plant technology without the scale of >1,000 MW units.

Operating fleet context:

  • Decades of operating experience from CANDU 6 reactors worldwide.
  • Extensive life‑extension (Refurbishment) programs in Canada and abroad, reinforcing confidence in the underlying technology.

The Vice President is responsible for building and nurturing a high‑performance, multidisciplinary team with deep technical expertise, while fostering a culture of rigor, innovation, and market responsiveness. The role will develop and implement a forward‑looking product strategy that aligns EC6 design evolution, cost and schedule baselines, constructability considerations, and supply chain readiness with Candu Energy's broader business objectives, including achieving "shovel‑ready" EC6 configurations and supporting global new build opportunities.

Leading the EC6 product development team and working in close collaboration with the EC6 capture execution team, the Vice President will play a critical role in supporting and advancing new build opportunities across multiple domestic and international markets. By aligning product development priorities with market needs and customer requirements, this role will strengthen Candu Energy's'ability to compete effectively, support bid and capture activities, and position the EC6 as a scalable, bankable solution for global deployment. Through disciplined leadership, innovation, and collaboration, the Vice President will help reinforce CANDU's leadership in large new nuclear while enabling confident transition from product readiness to future project execution.
