Senior Highways Engineer

Shape the highways of tomorrow.

Join as a Senior Highways Engineer in our Transportation team. We work on projects of all sizes, scopes and scales. The Senior Highways Engineer will take the lead in reviewing design and consultation, along with the delivery of any assigned work. The works will include major planned and responsive maintenance on footways, drainage and carriageways and you'll be part of these collaborative design teams based in Aylesbury Buckinghamshire.

Within Buckinghamshire Highways we have several new permanent positions that will help us to continue to keep the highways network safe while supporting the economic growth of the county. These posts will contribute to by allowing us to effectively maintain and improve our highways assets across the Buckinghamshire Network including drainage, footways, carriageways, street furniture and structures improvement schemes.

Your purpose:

  • Leading technical delivery of highway engineering projects.
  • Deliver work packages with scope to move up to managing schemes and multi-disciplinary teams.
  • Provide support to Project Managers within the delivery team(s) in planning, programming, technical input to the pricing of project briefs, proposals, deliverables and cost estimation.
  • Be accountable for checking, reviewing, and authorising for issue: designs, documents, approvals, and reports.
  • Manage Engineers, Graduate Engineers and Technicians to deliver work packages - coordinating engineering resources including with GTC, India.
  • Maintain and develop excellent relationships and work collaboratively with clients and key stakeholders to deliver schemes/projects.
  • Mentor and upskill more junior staff helping them develop professionally and progress towards professional qualifications.
  • Be responsible for the preparation of feasibility studies, technical reports, detailed designs and production of contract documents across a variety of projects.
  • Help seek innovative solutions in achieving best value in delivering our services and promote knowledge lesson learning environment.

What you can bring:

  • A BEng or MEng in Civil Engineering (or equivalent) and preferably Incorporated or Chartered Engineer.
  • Demonstrable and significant experience in highway design working in accordance with the Design Manual for Roads and Bridges and other standards/best practice guidance.
  • Proven ability to mentor and develop team members.
  • Experience in major carriageway maintenance delivery would be desirable.
  • An understanding of the commercial aspects of project delivery.
  • An extensive knowledge and understanding of the relevant legislation, standards and procedures including the application of departures from standard.
  • NEC4 and/or Project Management experience (advantageous).

Security clearance :

This role may require security clearance and offers of employment will be dependent on obtaining the relevant level of clearance.  If this is necessary, it will be discussed with you at interview.
