What impact will the Red Sea Project have on Middle Eastern society?

The pursuit of Saudi Vision 2030 will see huge investments being funnelled towards significant projects in the construction space across the Middle East. With several large projects in the pipeline, there are big opportunities for construction businesses to have a huge, positive impact on Middle Eastern society.

The Red Sea Project is one of these investment areas. A project that is set to transform one of the world's last hidden national treasures into a thriving community based on tourism and hospitality. In this article, we explore the Red Sea Project and the impact it will have on Middle Eastern society.

What is the Red Sea Project?

The Red Sea Project is one of the three major investment channels detailed in Saudi Vision2030. The project will be located between the cities of Umluj and Al Wajh, along the western coast of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The area will cover over 28,000 km² of land and water, which also includes more than 90 islands.

The project's webpage highlights the importance of sustainability throughout the development, emphasising renewable energy supplies and water conservation. Also detailed are the project's three main objectives:

  1. To unlock new opportunities for the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia's tourism industry by establishing a world-class resort that attracts both domestic and international travellers.
  2. To make a positive contribution to Saudi Arabia's economy by opening the Kingdom up to the world and by unlocking new sectors.
  3. Creating new economic and educational opportunities for young people in the country to flourish.

What will the Red Sea Project involve?

The Red Sea Project will be made up of six main major projects. These include:

  1.  The Red Sea International Airport
  2.  A Landscape ursery
  3.  Waste Management Facility
  4.  Hotel Destinations
  5.  Construction Village with Central Medical Facility
  6.  A Coastal Village

Unlocking new opportunities

With an estimated $15 to $16 billion of investment, it is no surprise that there are huge opportunities in this area. This is especially true in the construction space. The scale of this project paired with ambitious targets around sustainability ensures a requirement for many skilled construction professionals.

For example, there will likely be considerable demand for suitability-quaified and experienced project managers, engineers (of all disciplines), architects, designers and environmental experts. Plus, as a project that plans on the use of innovative, cutting-edge technology it will be a fantastic platform for those looking to advance their careers and add skill to their CV.

Sustainability and the Red Sea Project

We have already mentioned how sustainability is a key driving factor behind the Red Sea Project. The project aims to support infrastructure that emphasises renewable energy and water conservation and reuse. This is a common theme across many ambitious projects which are upcoming in the next few years.

At AtkinsRéalis , our mission aligns with sustainably focused projects such as the Red Sea Project. As part of our commitment, we have outlined our purpose to engineer a better future for the planet and its people in our sustainability statement.
