AtkinsRéalis, Balfour Beatty and Egis Road Operations UK are part of a consortium, creating Connect Plus Services, a unique partnership with a collective strength in highways asset care from finance, through to design, build, maintenance as well as day to day operation.

As part of our 30-year remit to manage and improve the capital’s orbital motorway network, we deliver major improvement projects, such as widening 38 miles of the M25, refurbishing tunnels and bridges, and installing hundreds of variable messaging signs and gantries, helping to maximise the use of the network and deliver more reliable journeys. We also manage the Dartford River crossing and operate and maintain 440 kilometres of motorway providing our customer and road user with a world-class highway service.

About the role:

The role will provide technical design input to proposing and detailing design solutions for upcoming highways pavement renewal schemes around the CPS (M25) network. There is a broad range of engineering design challenges across the M25 and the need for safe and efficient design solutions are fundamental for keeping the UK’s biggest, busiest and most critical road networks operational day in, day out. 

This role will provide the individual projects which they can have complete design ownership over, leading and directing the design outcome of schemes, completing detailed design and then having the opportunity to follow through the practical construction onsite across the M25 network.

The designer will be expected to assist with method engineering reviews with framework contractors and ensure the design is based around safe and efficient construction processes.

The role will require efficient design coordination, reviewing documentation from Framework Consultants and assist in managing design workload in line with the delivery priorities and road space booking programme. The role will require a close working relationship with Asset and PM teams responsible for the respective assets, and be client facing.

General: Focus on cost-effective design solutions to maintain or improve the M25 highways asset to the standards agreed and considering the needs of key stakeholders. Deliver the outcomes agreed with the National Highways and Connect Plus DBFO Co. to programme and budget, and to meet CPS quality standards. Coordinate with Design, Asset and PM teams and organisations (NH SES).

Principle Accountabilities:

  • Develop and agree briefs with the design team and design suppliers, to cover scope, budget and programme, and to obtain agreement from Asset lead.
  • Prepare designs, reports, specifications and other deliverables to budget and programme.
  • Design coordination and management inline with the asset need and investment fund.
  • Undertake optioneering and feasibility of design solutions and preparation of whole life costing.
  • Preparation and review of contract documentation.
  • Site inspections pre & post works and during construction.
  • Manage and monitor all resources (internal and external) for safe and compliant design delivery to budget and programme.

Essential Skills:

  • Knowledge and understanding of highway related design areas, including design codes (DMRB/MCDHW/TSRGD etc.) relevant to highway engineering.
  • Knowledge of CDM and other H&S legislation.

Good to have Skills:

  • Membership or working towards membership of an appropriate professional institution (ICE, IStructE or CIHT).
  • College/University vocational qualification. (MEng/MSC/BEng/BSc/HNC and HND).
  • Pavement Engineer Certificate from the institute of Asphalt Technology (however not mandatory).
  • Asset Management experience.
  • Knowledge of the use of relevant computer design applications.
  • Knowledge of the Traffic Signs Manual Chapter 8.
