insights What collaboration and diversity means to Ashok

We live in a world that faces an ever-increasing array of complex challenges from climate change to resource depletion. UNICEF estimates 700 million people could be displaced by intense water scarcity by 2030, and the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) reports 40 out of 50 state water managers are expecting water shortages in their states over the next decade.

Now more than ever, the role of thinkers, doers and innovators has become paramount in charting a course towards a more sustainable future.

Among those who have dedicated their expertise and unwavering commitment to engineering a better future is Ashok, Technical Manager leading the US West Water Infrastructure sub-practice.

AtkinsRéalis, a renowned design, engineering and project management organization, has been at the forefront of pioneering solutions for the most pressing global challenges.

It’s inspiring teams made up of managers like Ashok, and expert water resource engineers, who make our ambitions a reality.

Could you be the next hero to help us tackle these challenges?

Read on to get to know Ashok, some of the fascinating projects you could be a part of, and how teams in the water market contribute to net zero!

Q: How is collaboration central to what you do at AtkinsRéalis?

My role with AtkinsRéalis requires me to interact closely with the staff in my group as well as other leaders in the Water Practice both in the US and abroad, specifically in the UK and India.

The main goal of coordination between these internal groups is to help ensure projects are resourced appropriately whilst also ensuring staff have work and the necessary tools and support to successfully function in their respective roles and forward their careers.

Obviously, collaboration with every individual I communicate with is at the heart of that role.

What is diversity to you?

I see diversity as a collection of individuals with varied backgrounds across all spectrums – including race, ethnicity, age, people of different abilities, gender, sexual orientation etc. The beauty of diversity to me lies in the fact that it creates a perfect environment that fosters learning and growth and it provides the opportunity to develop the ability to empathize.

It’s important for us to encourage diversity and inclusion as it promotes diversity of thought. Diversity and collaboration stimulate problem-solving, push innovation, and help us all make sure we’re meeting the needs of all people through our projects, as we shape the world around us.

What is your favorite movie and why?

“The Shawshank Redemption.” I really like the main character’s ability to persevere through injustice and the redemptive qualities of the human spirit that are conveyed during the film.

What is your favorite quote and why?

“You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself any direction you choose." - Dr. Seuss. I like that it alludes to the fact every individual has an innate ability to control their own destiny.
