Insights Keeping the world moving: my career in sustainable railway engineering
Hi, I’m Daniele, Railway Engineer at AtkinsRéalis. I was born and raised in Milan, where I pursued my studies in mechanical engineering with a focus on mechanical design at the Polytechnic University of Milan. After completing my bachelor's degree in 2018, I decided it was time for a new adventure. I relocated to Sweden to pursue a master's degree in Railway Engineering at the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH).
How I became a railway engineer
Travelling and exploring new places has always captivated me, and I've had a lifelong passion for railways. A friend informed me about the master's programs offered at KTH. When I discovered the railway engineering program, I was immediately drawn to it. With great dedication and determination, I successfully completed my engineering studies with a specialization in railway technology.
Why I chose AtkinsRéalis
On finishing my studies and completing my thesis, I learnt about AtkinsRéalis, through a fellow doctoral student who spoke highly of the company. Intrigued by their positive feedback, I decided to apply for a vacant position as a consultant in Rolling Stock. I'm delighted that I got the job. I believe that rail transportation plays a crucial role in achieving environmental objectives and providing a sustainable and convenient mode of transport for future generations. This conviction fuels my motivation to give my best every day!
What keeps me at AtkinsRéalis
What I appreciate about working at AtkinsRéalis is the open-minded and inclusive mindset of my colleagues and collaborators. We value the diverse perspectives and contributions of individuals from different backgrounds when working towards our common goals. During my early days at AtkinsRéalis, I had the privilege of having a mentor who provided invaluable guidance and direction throughout my journey.
Being part of a smaller company like AtkinsRéalis Sweden gives me a sense of belonging and familiarity. Connecting with industry professionals and gaining insights into the local market and operators is easy. At the same time, being part of a globally operating company stimulates me and opens doors to future possibilities.
Some of my rail projects at AtkinsRéalis Sweden
In my initial role at AtkinsRéalis, I worked on a project involving the lifetime analysis of an aging tram fleet. The objective was to predict and optimize maintenance activities for these vehicles and identify trends over time.
This project gave me the opportunity to learn the fundamentals of Asset Management, work with extensive data sets, and understand the most common issues that arise with trams. I also participated in inspections of other rail-borne vehicles, which allowed me to delve deeper into the technical components of trains, ranging from simpler to more complex systems.
Through this work, I was able to identify correlations between parts that were more prone to failure and gain insight into the control and planning of maintenance operations at a depot. It was an incredibly enlightening experience that provided me with valuable insights," I conclude.
Currently, I am involved in a project where I inspect new rail vehicles before their final delivery and operation. AtkinsRéalis values me as part of their team, and I am grateful for the opportunity to contribute to their journey.
How I'm engineering a better future
As a consultant specializing in vehicle operation and maintenance, I collaborate with my colleagues to ensure the quality inspections, delivery, and commissioning of new rail vehicles. I also focus on improving vehicle maintenance procedures, ultimately contributing to a more efficient and reliable transportation system.
Through my work, I believe I am helping to "engineer a better future for the planet and its people." By promoting sustainable mobility that respects the environment and remains accessible to everyone, I play my part in creating a brighter tomorrow.
