Job Description
An exciting opportunity has arisen to join the heritage service line in Atkins’ Birmingham office. We work on a range of projects across the UK and internationally with specialisms in large scale infrastructure, environmental impact assessment and master planning alongside smaller more niche projects concerned with historic buildings and their settings, cultural tourism and archaeological strategies.
It is a fast-paced environment with a huge variety of work where your technical expertise and commercial acumen can help manage change in the historic environment for our clients. The post is permanent and to be based in Birmingham.
Applicants should come with experience in both archaeological consultancy and fieldwork and need to be armed with a robust and demonstrable understanding of their place within the UK planning system.
As an archaeological consultant you would be expected to deliver a range of complex and challenging projects to support client’s projects, with assistance and review from more senior members of the team. This will include a variety of work including planning and other consent applications, heritage statements, desk-based assessments, archaeological fieldwork strategies and written schemes of investigation, and delivering environmental statement chapters for large development schemes for sites in the UK and internationally. The procurement and management of archaeological contractors will also be an important part of the job.
You would support senior colleagues in the preparation of internal and external bids and offers of service and manage small scale projects to ensure their delivery on time and budget. You would also support the delivery of larger projects. Therefore, a sound level of commercial acumen and project management experience will be required. Being a team player will be key as you will need to be able to engage and communicate with others.
We want a heritage consultant with a strong technical background in archaeology and heritage management, and we expect excellent research and analytical skills along with good communication and computer skills. You should be able to demonstrate an understanding of the wider heritage sector and relevant environmental/ heritage legislation and guidance.
You will be responsible for assisting in the delivery of large projects, as well as taking charge of and delivering smaller scale development projects. It is therefore of critical importance that you are a team player who can easily engage and communicate clearly with others. You will need to ensure that your work is of the highest standard and be able to contribute your technical expertise and interests to the development of the heritage service line and the Atkins as a whole.
