Atkins seeks an energetic and highly motivated self-starter to join our Atlanta Southeast Ecology Group as a Project Manager-Ecology.
MAJOR FUNCTION/ROLE:
Apply ecological and environmental knowledge toward both business development goals and the assessment of project sites, along with preparation of environment documents and regulatory applications.
Work with DOT BU leadership to pre-position for contracts, maintain existing relationships with DOT clients in Georgia, Alabama, Tennessee, and Mississippi.
Explore new business opportunities in the environmental/ecology field with existing DOT clients. Identify prospects, screen project opportunities, and schedule contacts, visits, information gathering and follow-ups as appropriate.
JOB DUTIES:
Maintain regular contact with ecology staff and management of DOTs through phone calls and/or visits.
Provide input into and write ecology sections of various proposals and SOQs as needed.
Where appropriate serve as the lead senior ecologist on major pursuits involving significant ecology components.
Performs work which involves conventional practice but may include a variety of complex features such as conflicting requirements, unsuitability of conventional materials or procedures, or difficult coordination requirements.
Evaluation of impacts from transportation and other civil engineering projects on the natural environment.
Coordinate with design professionals and overall project team for accurate depiction of natural resources on construction plans and to identify opportunities for avoiding and minimizing potential impacts.
Perform field investigations of projects sites including wetland and stream delineations with functional assessments according to applicable methodologies.
Perform GPS field mapping, post processing, and distribution of GPS-mapped resources in multiple formats.
Document, analyze, and interpret quantitative and qualitative data on projects of varying complexity and size within Georgia and the southeast.
Evaluate, map, and describe on-site habitats while identifying those potentially suitable to support protected species.
Prepare documentation and technical reports detailing the findings of ecological surveys and coordinate with state and federal agencies.
Prepare special provisions and permit applications for various regulatory agencies, including the US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) and Georgia Environmental Protection Division (EPD).
Conduct site reviews with the USACE and/or Georgia EPD and participate in project meetings.
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:
B.A./B.S. or M.S. in a field of Natural Science. Graduate degree desirable. Management coursework and/or MBA a plus. This level may be achieved with 8 years experience in project production and technical professional activities, two of these working as a Sr. Technical Professional.
GDOT experience required.
Completion of training courses required for GDOT pre-qualification in the area of Ecology preferred.
Strong botanical identification skills is required.
SPECIAL SKILLS:
Strong interpersonal skills; good public speaking ability; strong project financial management skills; knowledge of production support systems and personal computer proficiency.
Proven business development skills including contributing to proposals and face to face discussions with clients regarding upcoming contracts.
Good analytical skills and attention to detail, technical writing, computer and communication skills.
Aptitude for maintaining a professional attitude and attention to detail while working alone and within a team environment.
Excellent technical writing and verbal communication skills with clients and colleagues.
Strong organizational, task and time management, deductive reasoning, and analytical skills.
Proficiency with the MS Office suite of software, ArcGIS, Trimble GPS, and Pathfinder Office.
Similar environmental consultation experience related to GDOT and other southeastern DOTs as related to linear
Projects (including projects with federal funding) and regulatory consultation experience with USACE and/or GA EPD.
Strong botanical identification skills within the southeast, specifically within the ecoregions comprising Georgia preferred.
Experience with review and interpretation of construction plans.
PROFESSIONAL REGISTRATIONS:
Professional Registration in field of practice such as Professional Wetland Scientist (PWS) preferred if available.
