Atkins seeks an energetic and highly motivated self-starter to join our team in Austin, TX as an Entry-Level Traffic Engineer.

MAJOR FUNCTION / ROLE

Under supervision, performs routine traffic/transportation engineering/planning work while developing professional proficiency. We are a growing practice working on a diverse range of high profile projects throughout Texas and other states. We are looking for an individual who is interested in transportation planning, travel demand modeling and traffic engineering and flexible to work on a variety of projects.

On design assignments, works to learn how to clearly convey the design intent through engineering drawings and specifications. On assignments involving investigations and planning.

Works to learn the fundamentals of engineering processes and to apply them successfully to operating systems. Upholds engineering ethics and standards of conduct

JOB DUTIES
  • Generally, applies standard engineering techniques, procedures and criteria in carrying out a sequence of somewhat diversified tasks requiring the use of analysis, interpretation, and deductive reasoning.
  • Perform analytical and investigative tasks including traffic and crash data collection and data management.
  • Perform field review of project study areas, such as pedestrian and bicycle demand/use studies, signal operations reviews, and traffic circulation studies.
  • Assist with the technical tasks involved in urban and corridor planning studies and the documentation associated with governmental acceptance.
  • Perform traffic operations/engineering and capacity analysis for intersections, corridors, and regional networks.
  • Assist in the management of tasks related to signal retiming, traffic impact studies, corridor planning studies, and highway safety studies, and; Prepare written reports and presentations of project findings.

EDUCATION And EXPERIENCE
  • B.S. in Engineering. Minimal experience is required of incumbents with a Bachelor's Degree in a branch of Engineering directly related to hiring discipline; no experience required with a Master's degree.

SPECIAL SKILLS
  • The appropriately qualified candidate will have the following core competencies and required experience:
  • Bachelor's degree in civil engineering or a related field;
  • Achieved EI/EIT status at minimum or ability to obtain within six months
  • Experience with traffic engineering analysis and design software such as HCS, Synchro, VISSIM, CORSIM and MicroStation is preferred.
  • 0-5 years of traffic operations analysis experience; or recent masters level graduate with relevant transportation degree.
  • Proficiency with the MS Office suite of software;
  • Ability to effectively communicate with clients and colleagues, both verbally and in writing;
  • Strong decision making, organizational and time management skills; and analytical skills and attention to detail.
  • Good interpersonal skills and capable of developing technical writing, and communications skills.
  • PC and CAD skills required.

PROFESSIONAL REGISTRATIONS
  • E.I. or EIT desired.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
  • The preferred candidate will be expected to exercise independent judgment on regular assignments.
  • Receives instructions on specific assignment objectives, complex features and possible solutions.
  • Work is reviewed for application of sound professional judgment and assistance is furnished on unusual problems.
