Head of Future Energy Networks

The Energy Networks are evolving at such a fast pace, and in Atkins we are helping the Energy sector to achieve its targets through innovation. Whether it is to trial a new technology, a new market model, or new ways of designing the networks, in Atkins we are helping the network companies in their transition to new era.

Development of relationships with clients, including government stakeholders, project developers and energy organisations will be essential to success and you will therefore enjoy working with others, sometimes at client sites, sometimes from our offices, and thrive on working within a collaborative and diverse project environment.

About the Project or About the Team

We are looking for an experienced engineer to join our Energy Systems business to lead the Future Networks Team. This team in Atkins is responsible for delivery of various innovation projects in Electricity and Gas network companies. The team is highly skilled in electrical and mechanical engineering and are the trusted advisor and partner for a number of Transmission and Distribution Companies in the UK.

What you’ll be doing

As a member of senior leadership team within Energy Networks, you will lead a team of experts involved in helping the T&D companies in the UK to overcome various technical challenges in transitioning their business into what future energy systems demands. This involved new technology trials, change of business model (DNO to DSO), trial of new market models, new technology integration (electric vehicles to grid, de-centralised heat and power schemes) as well as regulatory issues.

You will be responsible for growing the team, develop partnership with suppliers and T&D clients, and enhance the capability of the team. You will also be expected to maximise the collaboration with wider teams within Atkins and to offer a world-class service to our clients.

You’ll need to have

You’ll have excellent communication, stakeholder management and influencing skills. You’ll be able to manage client relationships, engage constructively with multiple stakeholders and lead delivery of strategic work initiatives.  Through your work you will also help support and shape the development of our future business

  • Strong leadership and people management skills
  • Commercial acumen
  • Strong project management and portfolio management skills
  • In depth knowledge of electricity networks in the UK and Europe, challenges and opportunities in transition to low carbon economy
  • Experience of leading innovation projects within the regulated T&D networks
  • Technical competency in Electrical Power Systems (knowledge of Gas Networks in addition is desirable) 
  • Experience in working in dynamic environment
  • Excellent networking, written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to multi-task with strong attention to detail.
  • Ability to adapt to different cultures and working environments to build rapport with clients.
  • Degree level or equivalent professional qualification.

  • Lead and provide strategic guidance and input to bids
  • Work with our Project and Engineering Leads, advising on capability and competency development within our delivery teams
