What we are looking for:

This position is for a High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) System Study Engineer who is expected to perform studies to support HVDC project developments using simulation tools such as PSSE and PSCAD.  

The HVDC study Engineer is required to perform power system studies to support HVDC feasibility and integration studies and is expected to take an active role as OE reviewing system studies prepared by OEMs.  A minimum of 5 to 10 years’ experience working on similar assignment is required.

Responsibilities

  • Working in collaboration with the HVDC and HV Cables manager to prepare the following deliverables / provide the following engineering services (non-exhaustive):
  • HVDC performance specifications
  • HVDC converter station and equipment specifications
  • Conceptual and detailed drawings for CCHT converter stations (one-line diagrams, layout, material list)
  • Detailed design reviews of manufacturer’s design reports and drawings
  • On-site Installation and Commissioning supervision
  • Detailed design of HVDC interfaces (Low, Medium and High Voltage)
  • High Voltage AC stations electrical design
  • Factory testing supervision on behalf of Client
  • Client interfacing, and providing expertise in the areas of HVDC/FACTS and HV power systems
  • Assist Client in HVDC/FACTS technology selection
  • Design studies (such as filter design, grounding, lightning, lighting, EMF/EMI, audible noise, cable sizing, etc.)
  • Site visits to measure audible noise, ground resistance, harmonics, and electromagnetic fields data, etc.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, from a recognized institution (Master’s or PhD degree in power systems, an asset)
  • Minimum 5 to 10 years of relevant experience, particularly related to High Voltage DC equipment and converter stations, and High Voltage AC substations and equipment
  • Comprehensive understanding of high-voltage electric networks fundamentals
  • Knowledge of applicable IEC, IEEE and CSA standards
  • Experience in FACTS projects (e.g. STATCOM), an asset
  • Exceptional problem-solving and analytical capabilities with a focus achieving results
  • Team player with great interpersonal, communication and presentation skills
  • Client focused, highly autonomous, and ability to work under pressure
  • Eligibility for registration with a Professional Order of Engineers
  • Fluency in English language, both spoken and written. Additional languages will be considered an asset.
  • Proficiency in the following software tools (an asset): PSCAD, EMTP-RV, PSSE, CDEGS.
