The Technical Investigation Centre within Atkins consists of a team of 12 investigation engineers.  In addition to delivering the national Technical Investigation of Infrastructure Equipment framework contract, the section provides a wide variety of specialist technical support to a range of customers.
Atkins is seeking to recruit an experienced, enthusiastic, flexible and highly skilled Technical Investigation Engineer into the team which is based in Crewe, Cheshire.

Role
This role is that of a Lead Technical Investigation Engineer within the Technical Investigation Centre at Crewe with responsibility for carrying out technical investigations in order to determine why equipment or system failures have occurred and make recommendations to prevent reoccurrence. 

Primary functions of the role include :
• Technical Investigation:
o Review of existing failure information
o Research of equipment specification, typical operation and characteristics
o Derivation of suitable tests
o Execution of tests (in workshop/laboratory or on site)
o Commissioning, liaison and management of other specialist services if required, e.g. joint investigations with manufacturers/suppliers, use of specialists including optical consultants, metallurgists etc.
o Analysis of results in context of operational environment and further test iterations if required
o Formation of conclusions regarding findings and creation of recommendations
o Production of a detailed investigation report
• Collaborating with other team members, where necessary providing leadership and assistance to others carrying out technical investigations
• Working safely within guidelines, legislation, standards and processes to ensure the safety of self and others
• Actively engaging with clients to establish and maintain relationships, win work and uphold the section’s reputation
• Understanding investigation requirements, managing self and others to meet safety, quality, schedule and cost objectives
• Approval of investigation reports produced by other Technical Investigators


Essential Qualifications and Experience
• Technically minded/astute
• Significant technical knowledge and experience centred in one or more of the subject areas applicable to the section’s investigations:
o mechanical engineering
o material properties
o electrical/electronic engineering
o electromechanical engineering
o hydraulic systems
o optical systems
o computer based control systems
o railway engineering (Signalling, Permanent Way, OLE, Track etc.)
• Knowledge and experience of practical testing
• Good communication skills including the ability to write technical reports
• Reasonable level of IT skills

Desirable Qualifications and Experience
• Degree or higher in Engineering / Forensic Engineering or related subjects
• Any similar qualifications or experience which demonstrate ability in technical investigation
• Significant UK Signal Engineering (or other railway discipline) experience
• IRSE Lead Technical Investigator licence (must at least be prepared/capable to work towards and obtain a licence)
• UK driver’s licence
