The successful candidate will be part of our national Planning and Environment team which works directly with Atkins SNCLavalin’s multi-disciplinary teams and businesses in a number of offices throughout the UK, and across the world, on a variety of major infrastructure and development projects. Our team is one of the UK’s leading Planning consultancies, at the forefront of thought-leadership in planning and delivery of infrastructure and development and the use of digital data to support our work. We have lots of interesting projects working for a range of clients including Highways England, Network Rail, EDF, Environment Agency, Homes England, local authorities, and utility companies.
We require an experienced Principal/Senior Planner to join our successful and expanding Planning team. A growing number of our clients and future pipeline of work are based in the North, and we would therefore especially welcome applicants looking to join our teams based in Warrington, Leeds or Glasgow.
The candidate appointed will join a progressive national Planning team with a wide range of client interests in the public and private sectors. The successful candidate will work within a dynamic multi-disciplinary environment with colleagues in environmental, engineering and design disciplines across the wider Atkins UK and international teams. We are looking for people with a real passion for Planning and the skills to deliver transformative and high-quality infrastructure and communities.
The position requires an experienced planner with a working knowledge of the Development Consent Order process. The successful candidate will be a Chartered Planner combining an excellent track record in town planning with experience in preparing applications for large infrastructure projects within our growing markets, transportation, energy, water and development sectors. The role will require the successful candidate to provide direct support to our planning and consenting team to help to deliver and lead a wide range of DCO submissions, in addition to planning applications and development feasibility studies. A key part of the role will also be to work collaboratively with other environmental disciplines within the wider Atkins UK teams to provide comprehensive, high quality advice to public and private sector clients across a range of challenging infrastructure projects.
Responsibilities
- Preparation of applications and relevant supporting documents for a range of development proposals, including Development Consent Order applications, planning applications or Transport Works Act Orders applications;
- Negotiation of planning submissions successfully through the consenting process;
- Lead and support the delivery of planning advice to external and internal clients on planning consenting process for a range of development and infrastructure projects;
- Lead and manage project inputs from other technical disciplines within Atkins and external consultants;
- Programme, risk and budget management;
- Develop client network and collaborate with colleagues across Atkins to win work including through formal tenders and bids; and
- Management / mentoring of junior staff;
Requirements
- A relevant planning degree and full RTPI membership (or related / equivalent qualifications / professional membership);
- Sound knowledge of planning law and procedures, including the changing planning system at national, regional and local levels;
- Relevant experience of working in planning practice or a local government planning team, with a good working knowledge of the Development Consenting Order Process;
- Proven experience in the management and delivery of multi-disciplinary planning projects, including capability to work alongside and co-ordinate a range of technical specialists;
- Proven experience of building successful relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
- A need to demonstrate commercial awareness and ability to manage budgets.

- Be able to work under pressure, with excellent time management skills and proven success in meeting tight deadlines;
- Manage individual projects and multiple assignments on time and in budget;
- Work well as part of multi-disciplinary teams with the confidence to input effectively as an individual across a range of projects;
- Prepare accurate reports to a high standard;
- Able to check and review complex documents and summarise and present the key issues concisely, in a way which is understandable to non-specialists;
- Demonstrate strong verbal communication skills and the aptitude to rationally explain, explore and discuss town planning issues;
- Flexibly apply knowledge and experience to a variety of planning-related tasks;
Adaptable and prepared to take on new challenges and work from other Atkins or client office locations.
