The Transportation business covers all aspects of multidisciplinary design and management, from inception and options appraisal through to detailed design and delivery/construction support. It is our centre of excellence for the design of highway and rail infrastructure projects. We aim to be the first-choice designer for local and national highway authorities, contractors and developers.
We are working on many high-profile projects and frameworks nationwide, including Cambridge to Huntingdon A14 upgrade, Smart Motorways and Roads Investment Programmes through the Collaborative Delivery Framework for Highways England, HS2, East West Rail and the West Midlands Shared Professional Services with a number of local authorities.

To meet our growth ambitions, we are seeking a candidate in our Birmingham office able to demonstrate a high level of civil engineering technical capability who can support the technical delivery of bridge design projects. You will have a background in structural design and working within the UK highways and rail sector with a track record of successful delivery on engineering design projects.

Responsibilities
• Detailed design calculations for structures, bridges and foundations in accordance with British and European Standards, Railway Standards and other relevant design codes (BD, CIRIA etc)
• Surveys, inspection and appraisal of existing structures and bridges
• Preparation of reports such as feasibility studies, method statements, specifications, approval documents and detailed design documents
• Production of drawings in collaboration with CAD technicians
• Support to senior staff in co-ordination of tenders and projects for clients


Requirements – Essential
Technical

• BEng / MEng or MSc degree in Civil Engineering or equivalent
• Experience of Network Rail (NR), Highways England (HE) or local authority (LA) structures design and maintenance projects
• Experience of the current NR, HA and LA standards and conversant with the DMRB and CDM 2015
• Ability to design aspects of bridge structures from conceptual layout to detailed design
• Proficient in grillage and finite element software such as LUSAS and SuperSTRESS
• Proficient in all Microsoft Office software particularly MS Excel and Word
• Ability to prepare reports and collate specifications from all parties to the project and to collect other data and statistics necessary for the preparation of progress and technical reports
• Ability to research information and data independently
• Analytical skills with practical application in bridge design

Management
• Proven ability to keep control in pressed situations, deliver work within set timeframes and contribute to a good working environment.
• Experience of stakeholder management, e.g. specialist suppliers, independent checkers and local authorities

Requirements - Desirable
• Graduate Member of the ICE or IStructE working towards Chartership
• Flexibility for occasional periods working away from normal office location, including overseas for 3 to 6 months
• Experience of working to structural Eurocodes and/or AASHTO
• Experience of design interfaces e.g., geotechnical, environmental, highways, transport planning etc
• Familiarity with 3D design tools
• Ability to develop and agree scopes and manage the internal technical supply chain, including budgets, programme and quality of deliverable
• Candidates are required to be self motivated and able to work both independently as well as within a larger multi-discipline team delivering work to completion, within budget and to programme
