Technical Manager Instrumentation and Controls

This role will be based in Mississauga, ON.

Your role within the team:

  • Managing the design process from concept to preliminary to detailed design.
  • Planning and executing work consistent with quality, cost, and schedule requirements.
  • Coordinating and oversight of instrumentation and control design activities related to the completion of fundamental design for a nuclear power plant.
  • Coordinating the design interface between the NSP and balance of plant (BOP) portions of a nuclear power plant.
  • Working with assigned staff to find optimal solutions to project challenges.
  • Providing technical guidance to staff, as appropriate.
  • Ensuring that work is conducted in accordance with applicable Engineering and Quality Assurance procedures, and in accordance with the contract, applicable specifications, and technical requirements.
  • Interfacing with stakeholders, including Engineering peers, Modelling, Procurement, Construction representatives, and prospective equipment and/or system vendors, to ensure system designs meet performance, safety, and regulatory requirements, and that the resulting designs are constructable, operable, and maintainable.
  • Ensuring department deliverables are produced in accordance with budget, schedule, quality, and technical requirements.
  • Approving engineering documents and deliverables.
  • Removing barriers that could impact safety, quality, cost, and schedule performance.
  • Participating in the preparation of commercial proposals and approving the technical content of proposals prepared under their direction.
  • Forecasting resource demands for the assigned work scope, including required skills, capabilities, and durations.
  • Working with marketing and other business groups to maintain and improve client relationships and offerings.
  • The Technical Manager will oversee the work of 10 to 20 Instrumentation and Control engineering staff. Supervisory responsibilities include:
    • Fostering a positive team environment where good performance is recognized and celebrated.
    • Promoting a culture where safety is an overriding priority.
    • Promoting the use of human performance tools.
    • Promoting  AtkinsRéalis values with focus on ED&I.
    • Coaching for improved performance.
    • Performing administrative tasks, e.g., timesheet approvals, vacation approvals.
    • Recruitment of new staff with collaboration of Functional Managers as stake holders.
    • Performance feedback and performance enhancement.
    • Supporting the development of succession plans.
  • Supporting the Functional Management team (as requested) with:
    • Objectives and goals.
    • Individual Development Plan.
    • Training and Qualifications Management.
    • Knowledge Transfer.
    • Competency Management.

The ideal candidate:

  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical or mechatronics  engineering, or related field from an accredited University.
  • 5 years nuclear and/or CANDU technology experience is an asset.
  • 5 or more years of experience leading engineering teams.
  • Registered Professional Engineer in the Province of Ontario with good standing, or eligible within six (6) months of hire.
  • Experience managing engineering work with interfacing requirements involving other engineering teams (Process / Systems, Mechanical, Physics, Safety, Licensing, Civil / Structural, Electrical, Human Factors,), Procurement, Quality Assurance, Contracts, and Construction.
  • Experience working within a Quality Management System (CSA N286), and quality standards (CSA N299).
  • Working knowledge of/experience with the CSA, IEC, IEEE, and suites of standards pertaining to Electrical, Instrumentation and Control Engineering and other applicable standards and nuclear regulatory guides.
  • Experience delivering an overall plant control system design of a power production facility.
  • Experience and capability in regulatory communications in a regulated industry is an asset.
  • Experience working in a nuclear facility licensed in Canada is an asset.
  • Commercial acumen, with experience in procurement, contracts, supply chain, and/or logistics.
  • Station operations and/or station maintenance experience in a plant controls faculty is an asset.
  • Proven track record of performance in a multidiscipline, dynamic, project delivery environment.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent organization and time management skills.

Other Aspects:

  • Willing to travel to and potentially work at sites to meet business needs, inclusive of project (construction) site and equipment / component suppliers. (Note: the main work location will be our Mississauga campus location, based on a combination of project requirements and employee preference).
  • Security Clearance with Public Services and Procurement Canada is a condition of employment.
