I’m David Boland, project controls manager at AtkinsRéalis . Although I’m based in Perth, Australia, my work impacts many of the business processes in Asia Pacific. I work in construction and my main objective is to ensure that projects are completed on time and stay within budget. I’m responsible for all aspects of project scheduling, planning, and cost estimation. It’s my job to remove blockers to getting things done.

How did you come to work for AtkinsRéalis ?

I started with Kentz, a member of the AtkinsRéalis Group, in 2007. My first job was working on a mineral sands project in Mozambique. From there I moved around Southern Africa working on projects in locations that were pretty much off the beaten track.

How did you progress your career so quickly?

I was fortunate enough to spend my time surrounded by teams of experienced site and project managers, executing challenging projects in often very difficult circumstances. It was the best mentorship anyone could ask for!

Plus, working in remote African locations, many opportunities came my way. I jumped at every one and was soon taking on more senior positions with increased responsibility. Kentz rewarded my enthusiasm and commitment by trusting me to lead construction projects much earlier in life than most.

Tell us about a career defining project

A definite highlight was taking on the role of deputy project manager on the Nacala Coal Terminal Project in Mozambique. I ran a site of 1,200 team members. Delivering a safe project on time is always full of challenges and Mozambique is ranked 135/190 global economies in terms of “ease of doing business”. So from moving people, materials and equipment, to dealing with project stakeholders at every level, this project demanded the best of our teams.

Being part of a team focused on construction project delivery was always a rewarding process with Kentz. But the Nacala project was a game changer for the team. We gained a huge amount of confidence knowing that we could deliver successful projects on this scale.
