At AtkinsRéalis, we believe that sustainability is more than just a goal - it shapes everything we do.

For over a decade, our team members, like the one you'll meet today, have been working to engineer a better future by addressing some of the most pressing environmental challenges.

Meet Freya, one of our Associate Sustainability and Carbon Consultants, who shares her journey from studying climate change to leading impactful projects.

What inspired you to pursue a career in sustainability?

"I love my job because I’m making the world better, little by little, while continuously learning, meeting new people, and exploring new ideas.

Since graduating in 2014 with a focus on climate processes and change, I’ve been drawn to sustainability through my passion for science and geography.

Over time, my understanding has expanded beyond environmental concerns to include sustainable business practices and how to empower others to make it a reality."

What does sustainability in infrastructure design mean to you? How do you think we can ‘engineer a better future’?

"Sustainability in infrastructure design is about thinking bigger and considering the full picture.

It’s about bringing together insights from experts across disciplines to create solutions that balance the needs of people, society, and the environment for both now and in an uncertain future.

It’s challenging, but if any team is equipped to engineer a better future, it’s ours at AtkinsRéalis."

Can you share some interesting sustainability projects you’ve worked on recently?

"I’ve worked on various projects, primarily focused on decarbonisation. One highlight is leading a team to create a net-zero roadmap for Transport Scotland’s motorways and A roads.

I’m also the carbon technical lead on transforming the Ministry of Defence’s acquisition and operations to cut emissions.

Other memorable projects include helping HS2 Ltd estimate the carbon impact of land-use changes and working with the Environment Agency on a behavior change programme. The variety keeps me excited for what’s next!"

What advice would you give to sustainability professionals considering a career at AtkinsRéalis?

"At AtkinsRéalis, you get to work on high-impact projects with major clients and alongside top technical experts.

The opportunities to grow and shape your career are extensive, and I’ve found it to be a supportive, flexible environment where I can balance my professional ambitions with personal priorities."

How has your role at AtkinsRéalis enabled your career progression in sustainability?

"AtkinsRéalis offers incredible opportunities, regardless of seniority. I’ve been able to take on leadership roles, engage in technical innovation, and interact with clients, all of which have helped me develop.

Despite taking two periods of maternity leave, I’ve never felt like my career was compromised. The company’s flexibility and trust have allowed me to continue progressing without sacrificing family or work-life balance."

How do you #MakeItBrilliant in your sustainability career at AtkinsRéalis?

"I #MakeItBrilliant by bringing energy and expertise to help our clients create more sustainable projects.

I’m proud to be part of a team that is shaping a better future, both in the daily tasks we complete and in the larger impact we strive for."
