What inspired Jason to become a designer?

As part of our #PeopleDriveResults campaign, this week we have caught up with Jason from our Canada office.Image of JAson smilingCan you tell us a little bit about your professional background?

I’ve worked in the consulting field for 10 years. My first experience in consulting was in a drafting position where I worked on a diverse portfolio of projects, including commercial fit-ups, wastewater treatment facilities and electrical substations. In this role I was able to develop some important tools for design communication. Specifically, I learned how to accurately convey design intent through drawings and specifications.

After several years of working as a drafter, I moved into a design-based role in building engineering where I had the opportunity to work alongside some incredibly talented people within the industry. I have had the privilege of being on design teams that were involved in projects such as building restoration, mixed-use towers and institutional developments.

What inspired you to become a designer?

I had no idea what I wanted to do after high school. My aspirations of becoming a professional athlete weren’t exactly panning out, and neither was my dream of becoming a rock star. I realized in my early 20’s that I needed to obtain an education. I chose to pursue an electrical program thinking I would become an electrician. It wasn’t until I was a few years into consulting that I realized I had a passion for collaborative design.

Today, my colleagues inspire me to succeed. I want to do better every day for the benefit of not only our clients, but for our design team.

What is the coolest thing you are working on?

AtkinsRéalis has partnered with a local architect to expand the Manoir Ronald McDonald House located next to the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario (CHEO) in Ottawa, Canada and I have the privilege of leading our design team for this project. I’ve been involved in some interesting restoration-based projects in the past, but this project will undoubtedly have the most positive impact on our community. The motivation to succeed strikes me to the core and I appreciate how much of a difference this building will make to so many families.

What do you think has had the biggest impact on your career development to date?

A few years back, I realized that I was dependent on alcohol and needed a serious change in my life. With the support of some amazing people I was able to break the dependency. Since then, my personal and professional life have improved dramatically. I’m more available, dependable, and consistent. I have new career goals and aspirations that I could never have imagined pursuing. I’m now able to deal with life’s curveballs with a bit more grace.

What is the best advice you were ever given? Who was it from?

“Looking up to others is healthy but comparing yourself to others is not. Be yourself. Trust yourself.” – A close friend.

What is your favorite quote and why?

“Knowledge is knowing a tomato is a fruit. Wisdom is knowing not to use it in a fruit salad.” I always appreciate a good knowledge versus wisdom reference!

Can you tell us one fun fact about yourself?

I enjoy listening to motion picture soundtracks while I work! Hans Zimmer and James Horner are in my corner when I need them most.
