Insights Why AtkinsRéalis is driving full speed ahead on the road to Net Zero

It is widely accepted that society must act fast to reduce the rising impacts of climate change.

At AtkinsRéalis, our business strategy is based around the United Nation’s (UN) Sustainable Business Goals. Our vision is to create sustainable solutions that connect people, data, and technology to design, deliver and operate the most complex projects. As a global, future-focused business, we have an obligation to establish solutions that address global challenges, from growing populations to climate change.

The regions in which we work are all experiencing climate change differently. Some low coastal regions such as those in Asia Pacific will be subject to more frequent flooding, whereas hurricanes are seen more often in the North Atlantic region for example. Therefore, we want to ensure that the activities we undertake to conduct our business are responsible and beneficial to the environment, society, and the local and global economies.

What is Net Zero?

To achieve net-zero there must be a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions and/or any ongoing emissions are to be balanced by removals. The 2015 Paris Agreement emphasises the necessity for net-zero, requiring countries to ‘achieve a balance between anthropogenic emissions by sources and removals by sinks of greenhouse gases in the second half of this century’.

From moving to a low carbon economy to adopting a sustainable business strategy, our approach at AtkinsRéalis means we can adapt to and anticipate global changes, and support our clients in delivering long-term, sustainable results.

Achieving Net-Zero in APAC

The wider APAC region, encompassing many countries, time zones, and communities, has already been experiencing the devastating impacts of climate change. In India, the seventh most vulnerable country with respect to climate extremes, a spike in weather events including unprecedented rain and flooding triggered environmentalists to call on the government to prioritise climate-proof infrastructure and buildings.

Sustainable construction is a viable option to help achieve net zero and solve other issues in APAC. In Hong Kong, for example, it is expected to help the city’s housing crisis. Green building is being increasingly used in Hong Kong it drives key energy efficiencies through the integration of green technologies, whilst simultaneously reducing carbon.

Sustainability at AtkinsRéalis

At AtkinsRéalis , we have played a huge role in delivering engineering excellence across the Asia-Pacific region, notably in Australia, Hong-Kong, India, and Singapore. We are designing and building for a greener future on our journey to Net Zero, and we’re only going to enhance our offering as technologies and innovations improve.

Our strategy and approach to sustainability at AtkinsRéalis leverages the exceptional experience we have developed over the years in addressing the social, environmental and economic impacts, opportunities, and risks associated with large infrastructure, energy and industrial development projects.

Our sustainability ambitions will enable change on all our projects globally, encouraging us to discover new and better ways of working and ensuring we achieve our Net Zero targets.
