Denmark’s digital sea plan

Spatial marine plans are vital for coordinating the many different uses of sea areas – including sustainable development, environmental protection and preservation of marine resources.

Yet Denmark has some of the most complex sea geography anywhere – comprising the Jutland Peninsula and numerous islands. Prior to 2021, there was no holistic plan. The Danish Maritime Authority had to rely on a range of physical and digital sectoral plans, hampering the transparency and consultation around development.

Making the invisible, visible

As a system supplier for the Danish Maritime Authority, Atkins, a member of the AtkinsRéalis Group, had responsibility for the design, development, implementation and testing of an entirely new digital platform.

Finalised in March 2021, this new portal consolidates all existing plans and data to create an at-your-fingertips resource – representing the entire Danish marine area including the marine internal waters, the territorial sea and the EEZ.

It means it’s the first time that legally valid information is available exclusively in a digital form, with all associated regulations. So users can instantly see what area-use designations and associated regulations apply in a given marine area, aiding developers, planners and those who wish to participate in the consultation process.

Nominated for the Geodata Award

Based on Atkins' cFlow platform, the portal has been developed with a focus on maximum user-friendliness, operational stability and security.

To the credit of our people, it was even nominated for the Geodata Award 2021 – both for the jury award and the audience award.
