Our national Water Management Consultancy forms part of our Environment Practice, comprising over 500 leading technical specialists, and supporting our 3,000 strong Infrastructure business in Atkins. We are responsible for pioneering environmental design, assessment and management consultancy that tackles societies greatest water and environmental challenges. We provide specialist technical consultancy support for an international range of projects and clients across our key markets in water, transportation, cities and development, and energy. This includes support for nationally significant transportation projects in the UK and abroad.

Following significant successes in securing the assessment and design of major new infrastructure projects with our clients across the UK, we are looking for specialists and innovators in aquatic ecology, applied geomorphology and associated aquatic sciences at various levels of experience to join our Water Management Consultancy. 

Aquatic Environmental Scientist 

Full time role preferably based in our Derby, Glasgow or Oxford Office, and working with our key specialists from our national office bases (including Birmingham, Bristol, Cambridge, Derby, Glasgow, Epsom, Oxford, Peterborough, London, Swansea, Warrington).

Requirements

Mandatory requirements (assistant and upper grade appointment):
• A degree in a relevant discipline and preferably relevant post-graduate qualification (with focus on Water/Catchment Management).
• Experience in aquatic environmental assessment and management (including experience of undertaking Ecological Impact Assessment) with a focus on freshwater aquatic habitats and species.
• Experience of undertaking river and wetland habitat/ecological field surveys and site appraisal. Environment Agency Accredited RHS surveyor status is desirable.
• Working knowledge of the Water Framework Directive (WFD) and the tools used in the assessment of ecological status. WFD compliance assessment experience is desirable.
• Numerate, literate and familiar with IT and software appropriate to the tasks undertaken.
• A valid driving license and availability for travel across the UK and occasionally overseas.

Desirable requirements (assistant and upper grade appointment):
• Experience of working on major infrastructure projects, either in an environmental assessment, design, or supervision capacity.
• Experience of hydroecological investigation, impact assessment and water resource management.

Mandatory requirements (upper grade appointment)
• Appointment to upper grades will be based on Chartered status (e.g. CEnv, CSci, CEcol) and relevant experience of:
- project, programme and/or financial management;
- bid development and work winning;
- technical leadership within environmental water management; and
- client and stakeholder liaison.


Responsibilities :
• To support and lead the delivery of a wide range of environmental water management projects with a focus on habitat design, management and restoration, hydroecology, and environmental assessment/EIA through collaborative working with other Atkins’ specialists.
• To support enquiries and provide input to bids for the future success of the business. 
• Maintain excellent professional relationships which can lead to secure repeat business. We actively encourage strong, direct relationships with our clients, so you will also assist in building networks that will underpin new business. 
• To work effectively as part of a team and with other professionals (environmental scientists, engineers, planners) throughout Atkins to provide a consistent and integrated service to our clients.
• To succeed within this role, it is crucial to have a flexible ‘hands-on’ proactive approach to your work.
