Role

The Role

We are currently seeking two Assistant/Graduate Engineers to join our Bridges and Civils team within our Transportation Practice – one based in Swansea, and one in Cardiff. The successful candidates will support our team in Wales working on a number of exciting, high-profile projects and frameworks. This includes the A465 Sections 5 and 6 upgrade, supporting the South Wales Trunk Road Agent (SWTRA) and working alongside a number of local authorities throughout Wales. The team also support wider projects through the UK, currently working on Roads Investment Programmes for Highways England, High Speed 2 and East West Rail.

Using your technical and delivery skills, you will be responsible for delivering a variety of civil and structural design packages for new build highways and rail schemes, renewals schemes, assessment works and asset management schemes. Your duties will include the production of design packages, to budget, to programme, and in accordance with Atkins’ quality assurance systems.

You will have a background in civil engineering design, and an interest in the delivery of multi-disciplinary projects within highway or rail environments. You will ideally be familiar with working on projects at varying stages of development from feasibility to detailed design.

Responsibilities

The role will be varied, requiring a balance of relevant industry experience, technical ability, communication and stakeholder management skills. Expected criteria are:

  • Experience of working with key clients such as Local Authorities, Highways England, Network Rail, Developers and/or major Contractors
  • Good awareness of relevant design standards (e.g. Eurocodes, DMRB, MCHW and those of Highways England and Network Rail)
  • Ability to work to agreed scopes and budgets, to deliver design packages within set time frames
  • Ability to prepare reports and collate specifications – for projects and tenders
  • Sound knowledge of Microsoft Office programmes, particularly Word and Excel.
  • Sound interpersonal skills and ability to converse with a wide range of colleagues across a number of engineering disciplines
  • Excellent spoken and written English

We recognise that, particularly early in your career, your experience might not fit these criteria exactly but if you have a desire to develop within Transportation Civils and Structures, we look forward to making the most of your transferrable skills and would welcome hearing from you.

Qualifications

  • BEng / MEng or MSc degree in civil engineering or equivalent.
  • Graduate membership of the ICE or IStructE working towards Chartership, or a desire to become a member.
