Assistant Highways Engineer

We are looking for Assistant Highway Engineers to work alongside experienced Engineers in our Civil Engineering Practice in Chelmsford.

You will be responsible for small projects and designing elements of significant highway infrastructure projects with values up to £100million.

Our current workload includes a number of significant projects in London and across southern England for National and Local private and public sector Clients.

You will be responsible to an experienced Highway Engineer and will be expected to contribute to all elements of the design of highway infrastructure projects.

This role will be based in our recently refurbished office in Chelmsford. Chelmsford is in the county of Essex and is one of the newest cities in the UK with substantial investment being made in housing and retail. It is just 30 miles from London with excellent rail and road links to the capital. It is a city rich in heritage offering first class shopping, wining and dining, as well as beautiful parks, excellent leisure facilities and a vibrant nightlife.

Qualifications

o Foundation Degree or HND in Civil Engineering

Essential Criteria

o Proficient in the use of AutoCAD producing engineering drawings,
o Proven experience in the design of highway schemes (construction supervision experience will be an advantage),
o Ability to interpret and apply highway design standards using the DMRB or other appropriate standards,
o Knowledge and experience in the appropriate application of Health and Safety requirements,
o Ability to develop temporary traffic management arrangements in accordance with Chapter 8,
o Understanding of the CDM regulations and ability to undertake designer risk assessments,
o Proven experience in highway design including ability in at least one of the following; highway alignments, junction design, drainage, and pavements
o Ability to use proprietary engineering design software such as Civils 3D or Micro Drainage,
o Experience in the production of specifications in accordance with the Specification for Highways Works and knowledge of the production of other contract documents,
o A full UK driving licence is essential, as is a willingness to work flexibly to deliver projects to time and budget
o Membership of a professional institution (technician, graduate, incorporated or chartered)

Responsibilities

o Supporting more experienced Engineers in designing schemes for both the public and private sectors,
o Preparing scheme drawings, from feasibility design through to detailed design;
o Utilising 3-D design packages, ideally including MX, AutoDesk Civils 3D and Micro-drainage (or similar),
o Preparing works packages - bill of quantities, specifications and construction drawings,
o Assigning work to and checking/reviewing the work of technicians and apprentices,
o Assisting with the resolution of engineering problems,
o Ensuring tasks are carried out within agreed timescales and budgets,
o Working with others,
o Mentoring and supporting the development of technicians and apprentices,
o Keeping up-to-date with current methods and design guidelines,
o Compliance with Quality, Safety, Environment and managerial procedures.
