Atkins Transportation is our centre of excellence for the design of highway and rail infrastructure projects. We aim to be the first-choice designer for local and national highway authorities, contractors and developers. We are working on many high-profile projects and frameworks nationwide, including Cambridge to Huntingdon A14 upgrade, Smart Motorways and Roads Investment programmes through the Collaborative Delivery Framework for Highways England, HS2 and the West Midlands Shared Professional Services.

To meet our growth ambitions, we are seeking high calibre candidates to join our national Operational Safety Team to work on an expanding portfolio of the biggest and most challenging UK projects. Building on the recognised discipline of road safety, the Operational Safety Team are specialists responsible for managing the safety of all users of the road network, including those involved in maintenance and operation. The candidate will primarily support on road safety audits for a variety of schemes both locally and nationally. You will also be required to occasionally work with designers to support the development of schemes. Working collaboratively, you will do everything you can to excel and deliver work that exceed expectations. The role will offer a variety of different challenges and opportunities.

Responsibilities
·Acting as an Operational Safety Engineer in support of our designers.
·Preparing and checking documentation in support of the above
·Liaising with internal and external stakeholders.
·Undertaking Road Safety Audits.
·Maintaining a knowledge base of current and future developments within the operational safety field and communicating the relevant aspects to a wide group of infrastructure professionals.
·Working collaboratively across the Atkins Group.
·Preparing relevant parts of fee offers to support work winning activity.


Requirements
Essential:
·Degree (or equivalent) in engineering or an appropriate science subject.
·Experience of UK highway design using DMRB.
·Certificate of Competency in Road Safety Audit.
·Awareness of the principles of GD04/12.
·Awareness of the principles of IAN 191/16, or its predecessor IAN 139.
·Proficient IT skills.
·Full UK/EU Driving licence.
·Strong communication skills.

Desirable:
·Professional Membership, or working towards Membership, of a relevant institution.
·10 days ROSPA Road Safety Engineering Course.
·Understanding of Highways England and local authority processes, procedures and requirements.
·Experience in the application of GD04/12.
·Experience in the application of IAN 191/16, or its predecessor IAN 139.
·Background in quantitative and qualitative safety risk assessment.
·Experience of use of collision databases.
·Working knowledge of maintenance and other operational aspects of highways, including CDM 2015 Regulations.

This role may require security clearance and offers of employment will be dependent on obtaining the relevant level of clearance. If this is necessary it will be discussed with you at interview.
