Associate/Principal Environmental Consultant (Contaminated Land & Hydrogeology)

Atkins business is one of the world’s leading design, engineering and project management consultancies; we have the breadth and depth of expertise to respond to the most technically challenging and time critical infrastructure projects. The Contaminated Land & Hydrogeology (CL&H) Practice is a well-established, award winning, multi-disciplinary environmental and engineering practice with an extensive portfolio of regeneration and development projects and a highly skilled team. 

CL&H provides support to a number of the largest UK-based and international infrastructure projects; examples include Crossrail, eight2o, Thames Tideway, Humber Gateway offshore windfarm, East West Rail and London 2012 legacy development. In addition, we work on a number of national frameworks with some of the UK’s most knowledgeable clients managing land contamination liabilities on complex and challenging brownfield sites. Our client and project base is highly diverse with current projects in the nuclear new build sector, oil and gas sector, regeneration and redevelopment of brownfield land, and major road, rail and aviation infrastructure projects. 

We are currently looking to appoint an experienced consultant with a strong technical, people and project management skillset to join our growing team based in Epsom. Reporting to the CL&H South East Practice Manager, you will be responsible for managing and developing an existing team of talented individuals to deliver exciting and iconic infrastructure projects. 

The vacancy is for someone who will combine excellent project delivery, exceptional client management and business development, and strong team management skills. As a member of our team you will manage a range of projects working with our experienced staff to deliver excellence to our clients. You will work closely with a wide range of other professionals to deliver holistic solutions to environmental and engineering problems and to identify new opportunities. You will be expected to be involved with project management, business development, the training and mentoring of more junior staff and enhancement of technical excellence within the team.

Responsibilities
• Project management and technical leadership of a wide variety of contaminated land focussed projects, including the management of finances and programme delivery and technically reviewing others’ work. 
• Provide people leadership, oversee career and talent development, and manage employee performance.
• Maintain excellent professional relationships which will lead to and secure repeat business. 
• Work effectively as part of a team and with other professionals (environmental scientists, engineers, planners) to provide a consistent and integrated service to our clients. 
• Lead on work-winning, client development, preparation of proposals and input into bids for multi-disciplinary infrastructure projects. 
• Business Development – development of clients within key strategic markets such as developers, nuclear, transportation, energy and oil and gas.


Requirements

Qualifications
• MSc, MEng, BSc (Hons) or BEng (Hons) in a relevant science or engineering subject (e.g. geology, geotechnics, hydrogeology, chemistry, environmental science).
• Chartered Membership of relevant professional body (if not Chartered, we would expect the candidate, with our support, to become chartered within 6 to 12 months after joining).

Essential Criteria
• A minimum a 12 years relevant post-graduate experience (ideally within a consultancy environment) with a track record in winning and delivering high-quality work.
• Proven technical specialist with a track record in project management, technical leadership and delivery of Phase 1 Desk Studies, Phase 2 Site Investigations, detailed quantitative risk assessment, remediation options appraisals, remediation design and verification / validation for a range of different types of projects and clients. 
• Excellent working knowledge and demonstrable understanding of the relevant legislation, technical guidance, industry standards and best practice for contaminated land and waste.
• Proven experience in a team or people leadership position. 
• Customer focused with excellent relationship management skills. 
• Skilled at collaborative working, with excellent interpersonal skills and an ability to communicate effectively at all levels. Supportive and encouraging approach to mentoring less experienced members of the team. 
• Good understanding of commercial issues and business development.
• Flexible and prepared to take on new challenges. 
• Good time management skills.

Desirable Criteria
• Registered SiLC and SQP.
• Experience and knowledge of NEC3 and/or ICE contracts.
• Experience and knowledge of MMPs and the DoW Code of Practice.
• Experience and knowledge of EIAs, due diligence and permitting.
• Experience in qualitative and quantitative controlled waters and human health risk assessment (ideally with experience in common analytical modelling packages such as P20, ConSim, CLEA).
• Willingness to travel and take part in overseas projects.
