Job Title - Chief Engineer - Energy Systems

Our Nuclear & Power business provides expert consultancy, engineering and design, and project management services to the renewables, nuclear and conventional power sectors worldwide from our hubs in the United Kingdom, North America, Middle East and Asia Pacific.
We support our clients across the energy systems lifecycle from initial concept design through to engineering, procurement, construction and commissioning, as well as optimising the life of ageing infrastructure assisting with decommissioning, deconstruction and rehabilitation.
We deal with the most technically complex challenges across the full nuclear fuel cycle: from major new build programmes, through asset management and decommissioning for nuclear facilities including the waste management challenges, through our differentiated technology portfolio.

To build upon our extensive experience in the sector we are looking for a highly experienced Energy Systems Engineer to:
• Provide technical leadership, project direction and governance,
• Enhance our technical capability through team growth and development, and
• Develop new and fruitful client relationships, particularly in the emerging Hydrogen and CCS markets.

The role is based within our Energy Storage team, however the remit extends to the integration of all types of energy, its production, transportation and consumption, as such there will be a requirement to collaborate and corral work closely with our colleagues in Networks and Generation Systems businesses.
The home office shall be in one of our offices in either Glasgow or Strathclyde Business Park in North Lanarkshire.

A significant proportion of time may be spent visiting clients and other Atkins offices around the country. Flexibility on work location is therefore a pre-requisite, with a willingness to undertake secondments to other sites beneficial.


The Responsibilities:
• Take a leading role in the strategic development of markets and clients in the clean energy and low carbon sector.
• Take responsibility for the direction and management of complex and technically challenging engineering projects across our key markets
• Provide thought leadership on sustainable energy and low carbon economies
• Develop and maintain senior technical relationships with key clients, including leading presentations and developing solutions to their problems with them.
• Provide strong technical representation for Atkins to clients providing reassurance of Atkins’ technical ability and the overall quality of the work delivered.
• Take responsibility for the internal technical governance and quality of all deliverables to several major clients.
• Give technical and project management leadership to teams delivering to a number of key Atkins clients.
• Guide, mentor and support senior engineers and teams of engineers working under your purview.
• Provide suitable guidance and judgement regarding methods, approaches, standards, best practice
• Support bidding activities and the production of detailed proposal documents with responsibility for final technical sign-off of proposal documents.
• Manage task delivery against Time, Cost and Quality requirements.
• Support our design/engineering process through reviewing and checking colleagues’ work and development of processes and procedures

The Requirements:
• Degree-qualified or equivalent in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline, and preferably a Fellow Level Engineer with a suitable engineering Institution (IMechE, IStructE, etc.).

Essential Criteria:
• Strong interpersonal skills
• Leadership skills with specific experience of managing multidiscipline engineering design Teams.
• Experience of working in the energy sector with knowledge of the related design processes and procedures.
• Extensive experience of delivering complex projects across a variety of different disciplines.
• The ability and experience to advise clients on energy systems, low carbon technology, power system master planning, new build nuclear and for life extension and development of nuclear related sites.
• The ability to apply existing technical expertise and a sound understanding of engineering principles across varied projects and domains.
• Experience of cradle to grave design from requirements capture through options development, concept design, scheme design, detailed design and manufacture through to installation, testing and commissioning.
• A proven track record of delivering complex technical solutions in challenging timescales.
• Willingness to travel to clients’ sites around the country to assist in winning new work and delivering current projects.
• A desire to be challenged and to contribute to the success of the business.

This role may require security clearance and offers of employment will be dependent on obtaining the relevant level of clearance. If this is necessary, it will be discussed with you at interview.
